I am sure you have all seen/read about Gareth Williams, the MI6 bloke who was found dead in his flat.

On radio 4 news last night it was reported as follows:

After revelations today the Gareth Williams body was found in a sports bag padlocked, police say they are still treating his death as suspicious

Now is it just me or is that not stating the bleeding obvious? If you find a man dead padlocked inside a sports bag in bathtub, would it ever cross your mind that it was natural causes or suicide?

On searching the internet today I have come across this gem:

they (police) have not ruled out the possibility that Mr Williams died in an accident, from an overdose or even suicide.

One theory is that someone who was present at the time panicked and put his body in the bag but failed to remove it.

I mean come on, yeah maybe panic, but put him a bag and dump him in the bathtub so he's not found for days longer (no leakage through the ceiling into the flat below) but surely somebody who panics don't go and get a padlock and lock him in the bag just to be on the safe side?

On how bloody big do sports bags come nowadays just out of interest?

It's just political talk, they have have a set way how they present information to the press, the press are also careful how they word things, behind the scenes i am sure they will have their own opinions.

I'm sure they'll eventually rule that he was a part-time magician and died attempting his Houdini trick, the public will never know the real truth.

So much will be going on behind the scenes between the press and the security services, we will probably never know the truth. I don't think it's bad reporting and to call it suspicious is just highlighting the bleeding obvious.

You also can't rule out that perhaps somebody did panic and padlock him inside the bag... because they were high on drugs, thus in a moment of sheer panic did something they wouldn't have usually done.

It's probably best to wait until it all properly comes out before comment though as it's obviously quite shrouded given who he is.

Aren't the secret services known for releasing false information like this in the past? Whole thing seems a little iffy.

Love the way that ITV news last night described him as a "secret agent" when in all probability he was a civil servant doing quite a mundane desk job.

DA RUSSAINZ ARE COMNG!!! Seriously though, i suspect MI6 have a good idea as to how and why he died.

Indeed. Isn't he a math genius technical analyst for GCHQ (apparently 1st in Maths at 17 ) that did some work for MI6/CIA? If he was a real 'James Bond', surely we wouldn't even know about any of this (or MI6 are slipping)? :p

when it first broke into the news i heard the news reporter repeatedly say that it has nothing to do with his work

yea right...

i cant imagine why a mundane civil servant would find himself dead (from causes not easy to determine) inside a suitcase. would a mundane civil servant not work a 9-5 ? surely in the 2 weeks he was dead someone would have noticed that the guy who edits spreadsheets hasnt turned up for work.

his parents however called him an athlete before mathematician

I thought initially he'd been reported as being dismembered. I don't think I dreamt that.

If that's how he was discovered... can't get much more suspicious.

i thought the same jono... but i could easily of just assumed that because i know how big sports bags are and didnt read that he was a dwarf/midget.:p

Took annual leave perhaps.
As to why a mundane civil servant would find himself dead, mundane people find themselves dead day and daily whether in a sports bag or not. If it were conected to his work all of the information would probably not be so widely reported.

I think it's the police wording, as has been said the death itself might be accidental or even natural causes (but in circumstances that could have been very embarrassing) and someone panicked (people do some really odd things when they panic, even it the initial incident was purely accidental/natural causes*).
So by treating it as suspicious they aren't saying it's definitely murder, manslaughter, or accidental, but keeping an open mind as to the circumstances of the actual death, even if the way it was discovered is definitely suspicious..

*Same sort of reason some people who wouldn't normally dream of breaking the law drive off after an accident.

At first, they reported it was Al Quieda, then they reported it was a gay love affair gone wrong.

He was a keen cyclist so next they'll report that he was on his way to play cricket on his bike when he shinned himself on his l33t pedals somersaulted over the handlebars and ended up wrapped up in his sportsbag. His cricketing friends came along, recognised his sports bag, padlocked it and dropped it off at his flat for him, in the bathtub to be on the safe side......

Was going to say the same thing. I thought I heard C4 news say it on TV. The initial police dispatch report when they first arrived on the scene, also describing it as a 'neat job'.
