My missis is in the market for a new car and is interested in the Renault Megan. Not my car of choice but we're going to have a look at one this evening. Is there anything I need to know in particular, Ive been doing a lot of reading up I was just wondering if theres anything Ive missed.

Its a Megan 1.6 VVTI Dynamique, 2004-REG, 48K, 2 Owners from new, FSH, T&T till Jan 2011 asking price of £2400 (open to offers).

So what can you tell me...

I looked at one of those many moons ago, just as a cheap commuter, as they seemed oddly far too cheap for a 'newish' gen car..

However, the 1.6VVT engine is proven to have a common problem that is quite costly.. the CAM Dephaser..

Just google the term, and see how common it is!! It certainly put me off, even as a throw away commuter vehicle, it sounded far too likely to hit me in the wallet..

dephaser pulley is a bit of a known issue with these, result- new pulley most likely a timing belt kit at the same time and possibly a bit of programming required

quite a costly job according to a mate who works for renault

I had a megan 1.6 same colour as the above but a 5door, it was terrible.

Water ingress is a big problem, it had the fancy card and key-less entry, it refused to work when it washed or rained, as water got in the handles, the panoramic roof was fine thank god.
The 1.6 engine has an issue with something called the de-phaser pulley, which makes starting the engine from cold very hard, and sounds like a bag of nails in the process, make sure you test it starting a few times from stone cold.
The interior was ok but the door handles and gear stick covering would nick very easily and peel off looking unsightly.
Turn the steering from lock to lock, if it clunks it needs a mod doing to it to fix.
Rear lights would fog up occasionally.

Only nice thing about it was a comfy ride but theres much better cars out there for the money.
Oh and sqeeky brakes, especially on reversing.

Mine failed its first mot ,was a 54 plate for a boatload of stupid stuff.
My cooling fan would come on for no reason, killing the fuel economy.
Oh yeah changing the front headlamp bulbs was impossible.

Sold it to some muppets after only having it as a first car for a year, they were from down south and were coming from an e46 330, lol because of the running costs, lol.
