What do you think of this budget basket?

don't swap the seagate drive [£35.24] for that much more expensive western digital black drive [£47.99]
Hello stulid, do you really consider £12.75 to be "much more expensive" :D

Have you got any data comparisons of the two drives above please?

  • SATA 3Gb/s 16MB
  • SATA 6Gb/s 64MB
If there is no difference between the two drives "justifying" the extra £12.75 then you have a vaid point . . . .

24" approx works well as a dedicated monitor . . . I've had one of the past several years . . . paid £600 back in the day . . . nice to see them selling now for £150 odd!

Hmm, you know a lot of people are connecting their computers directly to the TV's now via HDMI . . . does your TV have HDMI?

Tell me about it i bought i a 26" lcd for 300 quid a few years back then i saw a deal the other day for a 42" lcd lg 1080p for £350  So i might have to pick that up ;)

And yeah i might hook up my pc to my tv when i move it into my room but that won't be for at least another year so i'm just looking for a nice stand alone monitor, something like a 22" should be sufficient.

I posted a link to a 500gb drive review, the samsung F3, WD Black and seagate barracuda are all almost identical in speed.

it really does come down to which one is cheapest.

something you should be all for with your past pistongs.

is £13.68 worth complaining about when the card is about £40 cheaper?
That's the decision the OP has to make depending on how many years he intends to run the card!
It would make sense to opt for the 5770 if used 8 hours a day for 3 years if the OP pays for his energy.

My pc is probably used for about 4 hours a day about 5 days a week(roughly)

i remember you helping someone else with picking a HDD and i read that review, it's what lead to me choosing the segate :)

Recalculated cost difference between a 4870 and 5770:

1 years usage in hours = 5 hours x 20 days x 12 months = 1200 hours per year
1 years usage in kWh = Kilowatts x hours = 0.05 x 1200 = 60 kWh per year
1 years total cost difference = kWh x cost per kWh = 60 * 9.842 = 590p = £5.90

That means you'd have to run the graphics card for 7 years to match the price of the 5770 in extra energy usage.
Makes very little sense especially when the 4870 is faster than the 5770 and the 4870 golden sample has excellent cooling so runs at similar temperatures.

Also, DX11 degrades performance in games on the 5770 to a non smooth fps:

here's a 1tb drive roundup, which has a black sata3.0 interface drive and the other black drives with the older interface,

www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/1tb-2tb-roundup-2_3.html#sect0

the graphs and tests show there's nothing in it, yes they are 1tb drives but it has to be similar for 500gb devices.

if the samsung F3 was on special offer I would be telling you to get one of them instead.

So how well would the 4870 run a modern game? lets say the new medal of honour for e.g

you thing the samsung is better than the segate? why?

I was just talking about the price mainly, those three drives are all within a nats whisker of each other, get the cheapest, if the WD black(sata3gbs or sata6gbs) where cheaper, I would be telling you to pick one of those.

so on most games the 4870 has better fps but consumes more power, gets hotter and is noisier.

Say i bought the 4870 how long would i have before i have to start thinking about upgrading?

The golden sample 4870 isn't hot, its definately not noisy either.
I bought one 3 days a go - it's silent and very cool.

Upgrade time is subjective to what games you play and at what settings.
I expect that it will last a good few years at full 1080p on high settings though.

In some cases it's faster than the 5830:

how longs a piece of string, if your budget could include a GTX460 then do it, but not at the cost of making the CPU or other components worse.

Lets do some maths to work out how much it will cost in energy bills.
Will be interesting!
Hey rickh,

sorry about delay! . . yup I'm totally interested in this so I'm wondering if you can help we work some stuff out . . . firstly are you 100% sure about your power figures for the HD 4870 . . have you got a link to the data that is showing you the idle power usage of the card only please? . . . load too may be handy and I will attempt a "blended" average . . .

Last time I did the maths the saving each year by cutting back on the kWh was pretty good! ;)

is £4.68 worth complaining about
is £13.68 worth complaining about
Slow down! ;)

kWh per year
Please don't forget I said I was an "eco-nut" so apart from working out the £££ I can't ignore the kWh . . . I'm getting my power from a wind-farm in cornwall via GoodEnergy and pay about 0.14p/kWh

I wish my maths skills were as good as yours, the only part of your orginal equation that tallied up was

8 hours x 29 days x 12 months = 2784 hours per year

p.s: sorry about the tangent ellingham! :p

Big.Wayne, google maths failed me because it put a space in the number (1 368) which when divided messed up the result, I spotted it and edited it 30 seconds after I posted, you must have been quick to load my first version!

Power usage is taken from the 2nd graph here:
http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/hd5750hd5770/16.html

Load is 100w difference, so a blend of 30% gameplay and 70% general pc use might give us an average watt difference between the 2 cards of around 65w ((100w*0.3)+(50w*0.7))

Hello stulid,

That review (05/03/2010) from doesn't appear to be using this drive (or are my eyeballs still not working properly?) :p

Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB

£47.99 inc

P.S: would it be too much trouble to actually work together without all the shenanigans please? . . . I'm here to help ellingham get specc'ed up and I'm not looking for any run ins if at all possible!

Heh . . and there was I thinking you were some kinda maths "guru! ;)

you must have been quick to load my first version!
Well yeah . . . with you guys I need to be your like a pair of velociraptors chewing my backside off! :o

Ok thanks . . . I would just add I'll be over the moon to be incorrect about anything I say but I'm a bit slower at drawing conclusions than maybe some other people . . . I also like to take data from a few sources and not be in so much of a rush to prove a point . . . I've owned all the Radeon HD 4XXX series and found them most excellent but my point about the power draw was from personal testing . . . I'm grateful for the input on the yearly costs ££ but please do take into "consideration" any kWh savings . . . at least don't disregard what I am saying about being energy-efficient . . .

I think it's our duty to at least make people getting systems specc'ed of the cost and kWh savings and leave it up to them to choose . . . thanks!
