What do you think of this budget basket?

DX11 is a moot point
DX11 degrades performance in games on the 5770 to a non smooth fps
Once again slow down and please read my posts fully . . . I didn't state that the HD 5770 1GB was the only option but rather that would be a "Possible" option depending on whether or not DX11 was relevant to ellingham or not? . . . there are other cards to be "considered" . . .

There is no rush here and when I said not to condem something without a "thorough" investigation I meant it . . . one review is not really basis to call DX11 a mOOt point . . . The O.P isn't even gaming at the moment so I'm not sure why we are rushing to sell him a Radeon HD 4870?

What am I missing here? :D

okay okay

I'll save up and get a GPU as i'm not in a rush to game and money is tight at the minute.

Depends on what gpu you are using, but 460 / 5850 / 5870 the 600w will be more than enough.

depends on the gpu, but it will out last a smaller watt model.

the CX400 only has one 6pin pcie connector, so any card that needs two connections would have to be bodged with an adaptor.

three things for a pc usually last the longest, case, monitor and psu.

while cpu's, graphic cards etc get upgraded its nice to have a psu which will allow future upgrades without worrying "is my psu good enough"

that bequiet will easily manage a GTX480, ATI5970(dual gpu)

For the lower end gpu's yes, but the higher end then I would look at something slightly more, in saying that my system which had crossfire 5850 pulled 430w form the mains with Prime and 3d win mark 06.

I have a thought, seem to remember Hardocp testing the 700w model of the modstream and giving it the big fail.

then retesting it because it was pointed out to them that it had to be tested at lower settings(think it was something to do with the temp s) to make its rated stats.

edit,

the test when it failed,

www.hardocp.com/article/2008/11/12/ocz_700w_modxstream_pro_power_supply

found the retest,

www.hardocp.com/article/2009/03/03/ocz_modxstream_pro_700w_40c_update/

can't be as good as the other psu's tested if they have to alter their tests to fit.

ellingham,

that Corsair 400 watts PSU would be fine for the system using an IGP and it would be fine for the system using a modern GPU that only needed a single 6-pin PCI-E plug . . . it is Spaghetti though! :(

Corsair CX 400W ATX

£32.99 inc

If however you want to allow the possibility of popping in almost any powerful GPU then you need to factor this in with a more beefier PSU . . preferably with no Spaghetti! :p

OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w

£56.99 inc

Haha cmon be serious! :p

what's wrong with the date of that review? they tested it when it came to market, would be a bit slow of them to wait a year until reviewing a product. lol

so unless you have information to share with us about a revision to the design of that psu since its release?, that review is valid.

Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB

£349.99 inc VAT

looks a little to close to 500w for comfort if furmark is run.

and with psus being most efficient at 50-60% load, a 500w psu could be considered under specced.
That's not entirely true.

See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/80_PLUS#Efficiency_level_certifications

80 Plus certified PSU's are efficient at 20%, 80% and 100%.
Thus, a higher power PSU (600w+) is still very efficient at idle (20%) and load (80%-100%).

More conclusively, look at the efficiency graphs from the 80plus website.

e.g. the ocz stealthxtreme2 600w

http://www.80plus.org/manu/psu/psu_reports/OCZ TECHNOLOGY_OCZ600SXS2_ECOS 447.1_600W_Report.pdf

Notice how the efficiency line never drops below 80% at varying loads.
