What do you think happens when you die?

We provide nutrients to the soil. Eventually those atoms and matter just might end up back in the food chain, until it gets to the point where we transcend and slowly arrive back on the plane of existence again. Our corporeal form enriches the soil, which feeds the flowers, which feed the insects, which feed the birds, and so on...

Oh who am I kidding, I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about.

It's because we're an evolved chemical reaction, with an interest in self-propagation. It pays to have an awareness of self. It is simply a highly complex mechanism evolved over time.

I would further add, highly opinionated of course, that our own perception of our own self-awareness, is simply an illusion, much like our identity (merely enabling social interaction (and in turn propagation, as said above), that springs forth from actually taking part in our own subtely unique experience of life in our particular strand/species of this evolved chemical reaction.

We have no real desires of our own, it's all just a tiny leap from the way atoms exchange electrons, tainted by our condition. Albeit distortions will inevitably arise, and who knows where it all leads. Eventually nowhere of course, but it could be interesting along the way.

I should add we have actually evolved to such an extent there are more neural pathways in our brains than atoms. Try and wrap your head around that one.

I've tried, but it hurts my brain. So I'm going to bed.

WE don't actually use anywhere near that many though. (if you did it would probably result in you dying instantly because thinking "hmm that pie smells nice" would trigger every response your brain can summon, so heart attack while exploding out of both ends of your downstairs works.

You go all smelly and bloated, people don't like you any more, throw you in a hole or burn you and your forgotten.

You could build something very complex that mimiced the mechanics of self awareness... but it wouldn't actually "know" it was alive... I know I'm a "thing" I can't see how that works without some connection to something outside of this existance.
