Starts tomorrow night on Sky 1

An Idiot Abroad (formerly known as Karl Pilkington's Seven Wonders Of The World) is an upcoming travel show on Sky1. It features Karl Pilkington travelling the globe in order to visit each of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. During his travels Karl will visit Great Wall of China, Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, Macchu Picchu in Peru, Chichen Itza in Mexico, the Taj Mahal in India, Petra in Jordan, The Colosseum in Rome and the Great Pyramids in Egypt. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant got the idea for this show after Karl had mentioned that he thought they were all a bit boring and had no interest in seeing them.

In February 2010 Ricky Gervais stated via his blog that Karl had lost weight due to the food in India, or as Ricky put it "he **** himself thin". Ricky also confirmed that he and Stephen Merchant have been involved with the editing of the show.

Looks funny

Literally cannot wait. I've heard all the podcasts and XFM shows too many times now. Some fresh material is needed desperately!

I like Karl Pilkington, what I don't like is that every time he says something Ricky Gervais has to laugh like it is the funniest thing he has heard ev0r.

He's like the fat kid at school that's scared of getting beat up so he laughs at everything no matter how crap.

Do want, hour long episodes to, so much Pilkington to come! :o

It usually is the funniest thing said thus far by any human.

He does come out with some funny stuff, but the more scripted element of the later shows ruined it imo.

I've been listening to the XFM shows on youtube and they started off great but slowly turned into a scripted comedy. Karl started off genuinely funny with his stories etc but now half way through the second season of radio shows his stories are obviously fake and so it just isn't funny. Every episode he tells an obviously untrue story, Rick shouts and calls him an idiot, then he says weird innit.

I'll check out the show though, sounds like it could be an interesting watch.

Will watch it, as it will no doubt be funny.

That said, I've never understood Pilkington. He can't be as stupid as he comes across, surely it's all just a deliberate act that he puts on.

It's not scripted at all, the reason they stopped doing them for a while is because Karl got well annoyed at people saying its scripted.

I do agree though a lot of the later shows were just retellings of stories he'd already said on earlier ones, I think sometimes Ricky and Steve have a plan of what they're going to talk about or have asked Karl to do something in particular, but at least 90% of the time they have no idea what he's going to say.

Someone I sort of know used to sort of know him way back when and said he is like that, but normally its a lot less stated and I for one think that is utterly reasonable. You can tell from other things how normal he is, normally he just sounds a little bitter but capable. Them 2 just bring it out of him, its not all that uncommon for people to be like that, they're just not normally as funny, plus combined with 2 of our better comedy stars.

I'm 100% sure that Pilkington believes his Monkey stories.
For instance a monkey not only joined the Fire Brigade but climbed up a ladder and carried a human down and then went home and made love to a wife of one of his colleagues.
Get real - it's scripted.
I have no doubt he comes out with nonsense like most of my mates (and me) but he then exaggerates on it with the help of Merchant & Gervais.
This show will be brilliant because Merchant & Gervais are such good writers.
