Im having a problem with my bike (Dahon Cadenza 8)
Im currently doing 33 miles a day on it commuting and once a month I have to get the rear wheel re-trued
It's been suggested that it might help if I fit a bigger tyre as the extra air will provide more protection for the wheel?
My bike shop was meant to do this when they re-trued the wheel, but I have just picked it up and it still has its original tyre, so Im gonna order one and do it myself.

Im trying to find out with the rims I have what the biggest tyre I can fit is?
I asked in the shop, but they had the kids in today, who really didn't seem to know what they were talking about..

I have WTB-SX24 rims with Continental Sport Contact 26” x 1.3 tyres - On the tyres it states, only fit into hooked rims (dont know if that is relevant?)
On the sticker on the rims it says "ETRO recommended tyre selection 26-52mm"
Can I fit 1.5 tyres onto 1.3 rims? etc etc
So guys, what is the biggest tyre I can fit onto this wheel?
Im guessing that I will need to change the inner tube as well, or I won't be able to inflate it fully.
If I need to post any more info - let me know

The wheels are 17mm inside width and 24mm outside width. Going by that I guess they are good for up to a 2.0" tyre. But the profile will be pretty rounded and it will be much slower rolling. Hooked rims is pretty much the norm. Don't worry about that. You can use the same inner tube if you use say a 1.5" tyre. You might need a bigger tube to run a 2.0" tyre as the tube will be stretching a lot making it thinner and more prone to flats.

I'd probably just go for a schwalbe marathon plus in a 1.75. Those things are solid as **** and fast rolling.

If you're having to get it trued once a month then the wheel must be past its best to be honest.

What sort of pressure are you running in the tyres?

The compatible size is just the tyre size the rim will take in iso size so 52mm = ~2". Hooked rim/clincher tyres are the norm as weescott says.

The wheel is only 6 months, I have a new one now as it went back to the manufacturer under warranty. I don't know the pressure, but the tyres are rock hard, no give at all..

List the sizes available

Im confused over the ERTRO values - on my rims it says 26mm-52mm
But I can't see a matching value on the schwarbe site for 26" wheels

Ok - I get that bit, but there is no matching value in that chart..

Don't worry about the ERTRO system and it's ISO standards. It takes into consideration bead seat diameter which any average joe doesn't need to know. You only need to know the tyre size that will fit. Which is 26" (wheel size) x 1.3" to 2.0" (tyre width)

schwalbe big apple are what I use and seem reasonably fast rolling considering how spongy they are (pressure dependant). You can pump them up hard if you really need too.

I do about half your mileage per day and go over some pretty rough stuff on 23mm wide tyres pumped up over 100psi. Bangs the hell out of the wheels sometimes but I don't get any wheel truing issues, so I also suspect something else might be up.

Are any of the spokes noticeably less tight than the others? I'm wondering if when you get the wheel trued they're just tweaking one of the spokes to pull the rim into line and it's just working loose again.

The rim measurement for 26" wheels is 559 and the width of a 1.75" tyre is 47 so a 47-559 = 26x1.75".

Best sticking to normal 26"/ 700c when buying tyres, the iso sizes are only really useful for getting replacements for very old fractional sized tyres.

Good luck with the tyre :)

No, they are all tight, but on the dahon forums there are several posts regarding dodgy wheels. My missus and I both have dahon bikes and within a month of riding, both of us had about half the spokes loose in the wheel and had to take them to be rebuilt (under warranty)

I bought mine under the ride to work scheme, I thought Id want to get the train for part of the journey, and didn't realise how quick Id build upto cycling the whole way, so Im gonna get myself a proper bike in 4 months as for the mileage Im doing, it is just too slow..

Damn, that's a bit of a bummer. Dahons sell on for good money on eBay though :)
