Nice and easy question, desire or galaxy S for my upgrade.

Both will be ok with updates for the next 18 months I take it?

Overall the Galaxy S is the better phone excpet in a few areas:
1. The Galaxy S is a little plasticy and looks like a cheap iphone
2. No Sense UI which some people love
3. GPS is a bit crap for most, but Froya is supposed to improve things a lot.
4. No camera flash, but the camera has a big aperature which counters that somewhat.

I went for the galaxy and have no regrets, flatmate has a desire so I can compare.

The screen was the deal breaker for me in the end, so much better

Its far from an easy question I'm afraid.

I'll try and make it as simple as possible, though its hard.

Desire - better software, camera flash, better build quality, cheaper (maybe)

Galaxy S - better hardware (monster screen)

You should really try them both.

I dont do any movie watching or films of any kind on the phone.

If the desire has the better camera and is better built I 'll go for that.

im forcing my wife to get a desire

so i can have it **** she dosent even care what it is as long as it makes calls she can have my hero

Desire, the Samsung has lag & GPS issues which can be fixed if you root the phone but as stock, it has issues.

The Desire also had SenseUI, one of the best software experiences you can get on a phone.

But the desire has a far inferior screen, crappy video recording, and weak battery life none of which can be fixed, so it's swings and roundabouts if you ask me.

It isn't far inferior at all, it's just not as good in direct sunlight and doesn't have as good battery saving properties as Super AMOLED.

Yet vs TFT/LCD screens, the Desire's AMOLED is still better at viewing angles, colour representation and battery life.

Super AMOLED in reality, only has better viewing angles - that's the only physical difference you will notice but viewing angles on a phone is a pretty dumb argument because it's a mobile. You can angle it any way you like, it's not like a TV where you might worry about the viewing experience of someone else in the room who's sat at an acute angle to the TV.

Super AMOLED = AMOLED with some refinements, the technology base is pretty much the same, they're not generations of different technology.

Video recording, the faster hardware of the Samsung is useful here and will record at a higher average FPS but video recording isn't even a good selling point for a phone. If your serious about portable recording, you'll be buying a FlipHD recorder, no phone would even come close to this.

I doubt anyone looks at video recording capabilities of a phone, over its multi media, social integration and web browsing features.

Also, good luck recording video's in the dark on the Galaxy.

My Desire battery lasts two days, easily. Based on the fact I'm at 50% battery since 23hrs unplugged, everything auto syncing in the background.

That is all well and good Mekrel, but you can no longer get an AMOLED Desire, unless its 2nd hand. :(

They are SLCD now.

The current Desires don't have AMOLED screen they have Sony Super LCD panels. My battery life is on 78% after 22 hours use with all syncing, widgets updating, auto brightness, 10~ browsing, 20minutes of music playing with headphones and that with a 3rd party battery.

Well atpbx, all I can say is go into store and play with the following phones (Not dummy models, but actual handsets):

  • Samsung Genio Touch
  • Samsung Galaxy S
  • HTC Desire

and answer the following questions:

  1. Why does the Genio Touch and Galaxy utilise the same cheap, thin and shiny plastic - yet one is a £400+ phone and the other £100?
  2. Which one is the better built phone?
  3. After actually using each phone for 15 minutes, which one has the best software experience?

Specifically look at the Mail application (not the Gmail application) and contacts application - you'll see the advantages Sense offers over TouchWiz.

Wait till september 14th (I think) and see what HTC announces as if it's anything like the htc g2 showing up engadget etc it should have a cpu upgrade (newer generation snapdragon with faster gpu) meaning it will be pretty close to the samsung in terms of raw performance. The rumoured htc desire hd could also be metal like the legend.

As to the os side of things, personally I can't stand sense (just don't like it) and would just like plain old vanilla android, unfortunately this seems to be a dying product on decent phones :(.

Also don't forget the htc milestone 2 has just been announced too.

You do have a point about the build quality and the superioty of Sense UI over TouchWiz 3.0, TouchWiz is improved a good deal with Froyo though. I got my Galaxy S for £320+10 simfree.

I was really worried I had made a mistake ordering my galaxy, especially when playing with my mates desire but as soon as we compared phones he was the one realising he had made the mistake.
The only thing I miss coming from an hero is the track ball.
Touch wiz is a worthy competitor to senseui and I dont miss senseui at all.
Posting this from my galaxy and totally loving it and the swype keyboard. :D
