The original Duke Nukem, released in 1991, popularised the concept of 3D shooters. Developed by iD Software, the game saw players shooting their way around a German castle.

The game was a massive hit, although its significance was eclipsed by iD's next title Doom.

The original was followed up with Duke Nukem 3D in 1997.

It also proved popular, but faced stiff competition from the likes of Quake and Unreal which, unlike Duke Nukem, used 3D polygons instead of sprites, resulting in a far better looking game.

Oops I see what they did there.....
