Hi,

My head has been melted over the past few weeks trying to research what PC will be best for my requirements and also to source one that is from a decent company and a competitive price. My 3 options are below and am hoping to get a bit of advice from you as I am starting to go a bit "nuts" everytime I hear the phrase CPU/GFX etc.., lol :D

I will be using the machine for watching movies/TV, general internet browsing, gaming (initially only for PES11 - but I know I'll be tempted in to some of the more intensive GFX games) and also as a DAW (digital audio workstation). I will be running programs like Nuendo, Realguitar, The Grand, Omnisphere and quite a few others. The PC may initially be hooked up to my now old Sharp Aquous 720p TV but I am hoping to get the LG 100hz 1080p LCD asap.

Is there one deal below that stands out as being the best ££ for performance? And at the same time ensuring I won't have any issues with the above?

Many thanks for any advice and I am now at the stage were I have to make a final decision and can't keep this going on and on any longer......

Cheers
Dee

Since you're doing digital audio work I would ignore the i3 and go for the i5 or the i7 if you can afford it.

This because you will benefit a lot from a quad core.

The i7 uses triple channel memory and is the best processor out there at the moment so obviously if you can afford it, I would take that. You really don't need an SSD so I'd really just take the SSD off and upgrade it later if you're going to spend 1000$, you might as well get the i7.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

I thought the ssd would be extra beneficial to me because I could load Windows and the likes of Nuendo and some of my main programs to it.........but there is a fair chance I could be talking balls :D

I'd ignore the i3 completely.
I'd remove the SSD.
I'd get a 1tb HDD rather than a 500.

I feel option 2 is overpriced.
Option 3 feels like better value for money.

What's the difference in the "viper" and the "onyx"? The former is £1274 with windows and a GTX470 (can't decide on the 470 or the 5850.....both same price and the benchmark websites don't seem to show much of a difference). Is it just the case with regards the actual PCs?

Ah, the viper also has a 1tb HDD (thanks for the advice above mate) and is £1189 without the SSD and a GTX470.....

The case is much better on the Viper too. I'd say go for it if you have the cash, otherwise don't worry about it.

470 is hotter and louder than the 5850 - by quite a lot :)

Oh.....hotter and louder don't sound great tbh :D

With the viper I could always SLI in the future with another 5xxx series card? **listen to me trying to be Mr Technical :D

Thanks for replying mate. I get the feeling it may be a 50/50 split with this "debate". I'm just gonna buy a book and move to a wee house on mountain lol :D

Seriously there are SO many choices my head is fried!!

Nvidia cards use "SLI".
ATI cards use "Crossfire".
They're essentially the same thing.

Regardless, you're more likely to have driver issues with multiple GPUs than you'd have with a single GPU. So you'd probably not want to add a second card - plus there'll be something else better by the time you get round to it.

Cheers Jake....a fellow Irishman too :)

Aye, it is head melting alright mate.....as for the comedy element it has to be done sometimes even when your head is spinning like the chick in the exorcist!!

its funny you should say that lol.

i had a feeling you wer from "my" wee island. you can tell
wen your talking to 1 of your own. phrases like "head melting"
and using the word "mate" a lot only comes from here. the english
dont use them at all the way we do.

and i can basically work out the accent wen you read your posts.

funny stuff lol:)
