Hi,

I am starting a photography business and I am going to need to sell on my Corrados for something a little more reliable and practical.

Looking around the £4k mark as a max. Got to have decent boot space for a heavy metal security box that will be bolted in to store camera equipment, safety first and all that.

Thinking of a 4x4 as it'll be great for off roading and going to out of the way places for landscapes/events. Diesel due to distances I am having to travel.

Age isn't a real issue as long as it doesn't look too dated, I don't want to turn up at a wedding in a mk1 land rover :D

Do you really need a 4x4? If you want reliable and 4x4 it's got to be jap, especially at this money. Otherwise, get a mondeo

Shogun? Older Land Cruiser? My money would go on buying a Discovery or an Audi A4 / A6 Avant Quattro.

Yeah, 4x4 would be best for size and getting right out in to the sticks. I'd never buy a mondeo, can't stand them.

Thanks, I will check those out!

Anyone know anything about the Jeep's? the grand cherokee for example. Seem nice enough for the money, and heard great things about the older Jeeps as off road vehicles.

Grand Cherokees are good if you can find them in well looked after, sub 80k condition - and only in 2.7 CRD form. They do go through discs/axle bearings/transmissions sometimes but buy a well maintained one and look after it, that should prevent the majority of those issues. The earlier 3.1TD is a VM unit that is prone to faults but can be kept going if you take care of it.

Even in 2.7 CRD form a Grand will do about 29mpg combined, so not fantastically economical but not crippling either. You'll be looking at one with relatively high mileage too if you want the 2.7CRD, like this:

The smaller, more reliable and cheaper to run Cherokee is a great choice but there's a compromise to be made - you get much more off-road capability but a firmer, more rugged on-road ride and you'll have to pick between either a fantastic but inefficient (average about 22mpg) 4-litre straight six or a 30mpg 2.5-litre diesel that requires care and attention to keep it in fine fettle. The interiors are also less luxurious (in a stereotypical American way) than the Grand.

I've owned (well, I still own one) three Cherokees so far, both pre and post facelift, and they're fantastic bits of kit.

A two litre diesel Freelander may be a more sensible alternative, you should be able to get an 02 or 03 one with about 70k on it for four grand.

Cool stuff :D A good Grand is a great vehicle, ones from that era even look good - I was tailing one (who'd waved at me, presumably because I was in a Jeep) in black that was a later 2.7CRD and it was quite a smart thing.

They are quite big though! :) Worth seeing if you can dig up someone who's run one, to get an idea of costs :)
