Credit Rating

If you are planning on paying it off every month then look for one with cashback or something, interest rates will not matter.

Agreed. get a cashback card, pay the balance off each month and you can actually gain.

Check out here - http://moneyfacts.co.uk/compare/credit-cards/cashback/

As also has been pointed out above, you bank are more likely to give you one than another company, as long as your bank account is running well. :)

I got turned down on my first mobile contract, even in 1992. Had to get my mum to take it out and pay her back each month lol.

I am moving into a new apartment hopefully in the next month, with a small mortgage so this will get me going, but I was hoping I would have everything sorted, i.e. credit rating, before i move in so I dont come across any unsuspected problems

Has the mortgage been agreed yet?

An original mortgage was agreed, but now I am getting a more expensive property, so I have to re apply today, my Advisor says this shouldnt be a problem.

What about using a loan website like wonga and paying back the next hour?

Odd that you have been accepted on a mortgage but not a mobile phone contract. Really odd.

NO! Just don't.

It is worth havinjg a look at your credit rating as I still don't understand why you have been turned down. if your file is thin then fine but mobile contracts are really easy normally. Are you on the voters roll at your current address? Bank account held at same address?

Check your credit file. Might cost a couple of quid - http://www.experian.co.uk/ & http://www.equifax.co.uk/.

Well I am not on the electoral roll, and I am currently living with a friend, but everything to do with me, Driving license, passport, bank accounts are registered to that address

Thats a toughie, as the only way to get a credit history is basicly to get into debt and slowly pay it off......which tbh, is not a good thing to do.

Get a personal loan, a credit card and make minimum payments (dont miss any ofc!) a mortgage, anything where you are in debt and paying interest for the privilege.

Dont pay your c/card off every month so avoiding interest charges, that really goes against you

What on earth are you talking about, iv spent 25 years settling credit cards every month.

To the OP, get an easy to obtain credit card, i cant think what they are called but there are a couple of cards with relaxed rules that charge a bit more interest, so repay what you spend.

Yes yes...there was a slight hint of sarcasm in my original statement that I now realise wouldn't have come through.

But if you had read the rest of the thread it's been pointed out the difference between overall credit rating and what makes a good/bad user to the credit card company specifically...and I made no distinction.

You want a credit rating, that means you have to show you use and manage credit sensibly

An overdraft is one form of credit.
