Not really sure what to make of this as i've never seen anything quite like it in my 15+ years of using PC's.
Sat down to watch a couple of movies on my HTPC last night and 30mins into the second movie it began to stutter. First thoughts were the usual, bad rip, codec disliking a specific encode etc. However this went out the window when i restarted the movie and now the first few mins were stuttering too.
Decided to go with a quick reboot and after Win7 shutdown my HTPC did not post. Luckily i had the side of the case off already as i'm messing around with a few different OS install and i noticed my CPU fan wasn't spinning. Then it hit me. During the second movie the CPU fan must have quit, the CPU (e2180) started to overheat and then it began throttling.
I gave the fan a little tap and it came to life however it was spinning at such a rate it sounded like a jet taking off.
The fan started to slow eventually and i rebooted back into Win7 and watched the final hour of the movie without a hitch.
Now the question is. What happened? I've had a few CPU, chipset and case fans die over the years and they've never just randomly decided to stop without making any kind of 'death noise' beforehand.
