What's your opinion on this?

Asking because the theatrical version is the only one on blu-ray and I don't know if I should wait for the extended one which may take ages.

Yeah, it's a big talking point. The current version is on 1.5 stars on "that big on-line South American rain forest that I'm not sure I can mention" - it's become a form of protest at the fact they're holding out on the extended versions to rake in more money.

Personally, I think the extended editions are a must if you're a fan. If you've never seen the movies or you're just so-so then the theatrical versions are worth it.

Extended editions boxed sets are probably the best put together special editions I own. They'd be hard-pressed to improve on them but if they do I'll buy them.

I absolutely love the films, but the extended editions are far too long. Hell, the theatrical cuts are too long, so the extended editions is definitely a no thanks. Bought the blurays of the theatrical version this week; was more concerned about the quality tbh as I've heard the transfers aren't brilliant, but for £25 I'm not all that bothered.

Extended all the way. Fleshes out the story as a whole very well.

I still think the Extended Edition Box Set is the best set i've ever bought for the content you get for the price.

You can spend ages watching the appendices/extras let alone the films :), which ill admit is what usually happens when i end up doing a lotr marathon now and again.

I have the theatrical and am glad I didn't buy the extended as I think they're all poor to be blunt.

Paper version all the way.

Films are good, but I keep going back to find those little bits in the book that make it special.

If you're read and loved the book - extended.

If you haven't - theatrical.

i've got all the extendeds on dvd, but still waiting for the BR to arrive, quality should be mentally lush i'm hoping, dont like the fact that it's taking this long and i hope prices aren't going to be as high as rumours suggest ( the tonne mark? )
but yeah extended for the win, loads more content and it gives a clearer story against the theatrical

Is there a date for the extended version? I've been avoiding DVD-BR upgrades but if the extended version doesnt require a disk swap mid film then i could very well spring for them

Personally I could never get over watching the added scenes in the extended, especially with the first one which I must have seen 4 or 5 times

I've got the boxset on Blu Ray but haven't watched any of them yet, with it being so long now since I saw any of the films if they brought out the extended versions now I could probably watch them without a problem

Agreed. Tom Bombadil etc.

Is the BluRay quality on these extended ones actually going to be any good? As the standard ones are poor or a bluray.
