Over the last few years I've been faced with even more evidence that my taste in stuff is going through some kind of filtering process where dross becomes awesome, awesome becomes mediocre, and great stays great but feels a bit dated. There are probably other shifts but it's too early to tell. Some cases in point :

  • St Elmo's Fire - just finished watching this on TV and boy it's nothing like I remembered from when I originally saw it in the 80's. Then it seemed hip and smart and telling a message about young people's lives and how they develop. Now it just seems like some actors of their time trying their best with a mediocre story and a terrible ending. Bad times. I loved me some Brat Pack.

  • Breakfast Club - obviously linked to the above due to the cast and the vibe at the time (can I say 'vibe' without alienating most under 30's and/or sounding like a total douche?) but I watched this for the Xth time a few weeks ago with some friends and it was just as awesome as we all remembered it being.
'Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did was wrong. But we think you're crazy to make an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us... In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. Does that answer your question? Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.

  • The Sisters of Mercy - I recently bought a new hi-fi and was in that zone where I had to listen to as much music as possible to understand how good my purchase was (hint : it was an awesome purchase). So as well as all my more current stuff, I fancied a wander down memory lane. Early Madness went well, as did some Cure and some Wonder Stuff. Things got a bit shaky around the All About Eve stage and then took a distinct downturn when it came to the SoM. I used to listen to those guys every night when I was younger and now it sounds dreadful. Uh, apart from This Corrosion which is still awesome. Taste! Make your mind up!

  • Flares - On The Stone Roses these were cool (I'm too young for the earlier guys who wore them) but on what looked like a 15 year old Kiwi biker chic (!), I just don't even know any more. Her friends also wore them. I was disappoint.

  • Red wine - As a youth, I hated you. Now I chug you down with vim and indeed vigour but still prefer your prettier but more ASBO-minded family member : beer. Wine goes up in our rating whilst beer stays in its top spot. Cashback!

  • Making stuff do what it shouldn't do - Until not so long ago, I used to meddle and tweak and enhance and optimise anything to do with my PC that I could. Hours would be spent streamlining the start up processes, separating partitions and honing all my components to be the best they could be. Now, I don't have the time or even the inclination for this. I have a mild OC on my probably now outdated 4970 and a more robust one on my Q9450. My PC works and I don't want to check my temperatures all the god damn time. Ah, this needs a :(

  • WIMMENZ - Awesome stays awesome. Rock on, hot wife :)

  • Fingerless gloves - I'm still undecided. 80's taste versus 10's taste is out on this one

I have many, many more but won't bore you.

tl;dr - tastes change and sometimes not in ways you'd ever expect.

I used to eat Haggis until I was horrifically sick one night. Never again.

Okay...that's a bit different :D

When I was a kid, I would eat the chunks of fat on pork chops. If I did that now I would chunder.

By the way, if anyone says a bad word about Ferris Bueller's Day Off there's going to be trouble.

I recently went on an 80s movie binge (what? '89 still counts!), Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club are still awesome, silly phrases aside :p

I used to tinker with my PC a lot, overclocking to the max with watercooling, disabling proccesses as much as possible and modding with UV lights but now I just have an old C2D with an aircooler and I really don't care about modding etc.
