Your Atkins daily diet ideas?

I'm disabled, so daily exercise isn't really an option (Rheumatoid Arthritis), plus I'm like 5'1" and weight as of last night 10.13 stone!

The thing is, I know what are good foods and what are bad foods but I cannot get my weight loss going thats why I thought a 2-4 week Atkins diet then a healthier diet thereafter would be a good idea to burn off a chunk of my body fat straight away then continue to eat healthy.

Early part of last year I went on a 2 month diet, really stuck too it cutting out fizzy drinks and high fat foods, skimmed milk etc..and the weight wouldn't move, lost like 4-6lbs in total.

Resulted in me giving up, now I'd like to try this and see how it goes.

I'm the same. I have RA too and the weight issue is a pain in the bottom!

Do you know how it makes you loss weight on atkins? It really doesn't have anything to do with eating less carbs strangely.

The vast amounts of protein somehow (thou they don't understand how yet) make you less hungry. In effect it makes you eat fewer calories so you loss weight.

Most of the things that people talk about that the diet causes like ketosis are rarely seen on test subjects. Atkins is only magic in that it takes the will power part out by somehow making you feel fuller / not hungry.

The BBC did a 2 year test on the 4 major diets and Atkins came out on top for weight loss and why? - because as Crowort says, you eat less.

I did 3 marathons and countless half marathons on the Atkins but one thing is definite, you'll get bored and go back to carbs and put the weight back on.

Another interesting fact, Dieticians at the NHS regularly give out the Atkins diet but NEVER call it that.

go on the Exante diet, works like atkins, i'e ketosis, you dont get hungry at all, Expect to lose 8lbs first week, then 3-5lbs weeks thereafter. any reason you cant go swimming?
Costs £86 for the whole month, so very cheap and very easy to do.

and no, Mr H wont do it, he likes being fat.

EVERY single person I know who has attempted the atkins have said, it works but it makes you feel like ****. You feel tired most of the time and out if it.

It's not the way I'd want to lose weight.

Few bits of advice, some has already been said:

1) Cut down on carb consumption as most of your daily calories are likely to come from this - eat whole grain versions instead (so brown rice, brown pasta, wholemeal bread, sweet potatoes etc)

2) Eat less rubbish - cut out all the fizzy drinks, crisps, biscuits etc.

3) Make sure to get some good quality fats in your diet from fish, avocado (as freefaller said), nuts, olive oil, eggs even fish oil supplements if you need to.

4) Eat fresh fruit and veg, but try not to go too heavy on bananas, apples, grapes etc as they contain quite a lot of fructose these days.

Just got to make sure you eat clean, cut out the processed food and hydrogenated fats and eat less carbs and you should see some weight loss :)

On a side note, the reason why the Atkins diet works is, as others have said, it suppresses your appetite. High fat diets tend to do this as your body has 2 ways of telling that your full - a nerve in your stomach and the lipid (ie fat) level in your blood. Also by not having many carbs you tend to have less insulin spikes over the day which reduces hunger.

I have loads of energy since I started, after the 2nd day there was a noticable difference...

I need 1 to 2 hours less sleep and dont get tired thru the day... I have a lot more energy...

I am currently do a similar diet, cyclical ketogenic diet, which is basically fats and proteins with minimal carbs (currently 25g a day).

Your body can get use to using Fats as its main energy source, most westerners have a Carb metabolic cycle. Over a short time Fats can take over, if you are on minimal carbs.

I must admit I do not feel tired, but will keep my carbs for before my gym sessions.

You will need to exercise regardless as its still calories in versus calories out. Calories can effectively come from anywhere but best to keep it balanced as possible.

That looks revolting! And you need your own account... :D

This hasn't been my experience of nhs dieticians at all. Almost everyone of them has used the 'healthy heart diet' which is high carb and low fat (of any type really).

There was some testing of adding fats too food not having a real effect on hungery as much as protein. I don't know how well the idea has been tested thou,

We're probably both right. Post meal hunger can come from the insulin spike you get after eating simple carbs. By eating more protein/fat and little or no carbs in a meal you reduce/negate this problem.

Ketogenic Diet (Keto diet)

Get yourself into Ketosis, should have enough energy to train if you get the protein/fat/carb ratios right.

Bare in mind you'll still need to be in a calorie deficit; some people think its a great diet 'cos you can eat cheese/eggs/chicken/sausages and go a bit crazy and don't think about calorie intake.

Google it.

The easy part is losing it, the hard part is stopping yourself from putting it back on.

Just look at your diet, obviously being disabled is a problem but can you not lift some small weights or something that gets you active.

The inventor of the atkins diet died of a heart attack. On that damning information alone, don't do it lol

I lost 3.8 stone in just over 3 months only prob is maintaining the weight when you stop the diet.

Best diet by far for losing weight and that is a fact

The majority of people who slate this diet havent been on the atkins diet btw, when you do the diet its amazing how much weight you lose so quickly, refined carbohydrates are not good for you at all.

You also feel more alert and not sluggish and have loads more energy as the refined(bad carbs) are out of your system

The only problem with the diet is it takes control of your life, as if you have one cheat once with carbs/alcohol you then have to wait 3-4 days for the fat burning cycle(Ketosis) to work again.

OP you need to buy the Atkins book and read it the diet is a lot more complex than you will realise, there are lots of things you have to follow to the tee else the diet wont work

Nothing wrong with Atkins diet if done right and done for a significant period of time.
