OH NOES! He bought a DIESEL!

I think it sounds like someone has installed a Sperm Whale in the back box, what on Earth is that wooping/whining sound it makes ...if it didn't have that sound it would sound ok.

Yes, I did not like that tbh.

The sound - I think - is the wastegate / dump valve at work.

I would be some what surprised if there was a dump valve on a diesel. With no throttle to close you don't get the high pressure air build up in the inlet pipe during lift off or gear changes in the way a petrol car does.

My diesel Scania has one! - same as just about every HGV I've driven! - its the turbo that requires the wastegate, not the fuel powering the engine that drives it afaik.

I'm guessing that e60 in the OP is running way beyond its standard boost hence the screaming wastegate. :)

The wastegate and dump valve are two completely different things. One limits the boost under load the other dumps boost on gear changes and throttle lift off when the throttle is closed.

Psst, the video was an E46 and Rilot's is an E65 ...no E60s to be seen :p.

:o

My mistake - I'd always assumed they were different terms for the same thing.

I guess my truck has the latter rather than the former?

I picked up the car on Saturday. Very happy.
Cooper did a fantastic prep job on the car. Wheels refurbed to perfection, every stone chip gone. It looks brand new.
I've driven 200 miles so far including a trip to Birmingham today where I averaged 44mpg. The more I drive, the more then soot thrower makes sense. The torque available at motorway cruising speeds is very useful for overtakes and makes the drive feel very relaxed.
I still don't like the sound it makes from the outside though.

I've already pulled the back end apart to start upgrading the hifi. I have a small sub and amp in the boot now which has helped with the lack of punch. More hifi upgrades to come.

Comfort seats are out of this world by the way.

BUT THE TORQUE ISNT AT THE WHEEEELZ ;)

Glad you're enjoying it, does look like a great car, especially for the money :)

How did you go about adding additional components (sub etc) to an audio system undoubtedly as complex as it is? Out of interest

I had to sell it to help pay for the car. I started a new job where I will be doing a lot of driving. I'm not a winter biker any more so I figured I'd flog the Tiger and buy another one in the spring.

Glad you like it then, I haven't touched the audio in any car since my first car, a MK3 Fiesta, where I changed everything. The Jag stereo isn't too bad actually, I have the 'premium' Alpine system in mine ...it's considerably better than the one in the 540i anyway, plenty good enough for me in the car.

I kind of miss my V8 torque on the motorway, oddly that's where I notice the missing 100lbs/ft the most.

So, I've had the 730d for 2 months. Here's my report.

I love it. The comfort is just superb after I worked out the best way to place the comfort seats. Handling is excellent for a car of this size too. I think the Dynamic Drive has a lot to do with that though.
I've averaged 35mpg so far with 45mpg on long motorway trips.
Performance is adequate and I certainly don't find myself wanting for more grunt. The torquey nature of the soot thrower suits motorway and a-road overtaking very well. Engine is silent at cruising speeds but makes a diesely sound when pushed. I still don't like the sound it makes at idle or when being driven around town when cold. Sounds like a bag of old spanners. How anyone can state "Modern diesels are so good, you don't know it's a diesel from inside as it's so quiet". That's a load of crap from people trying to justify their purchase. You CAN tell it's a diesel. It sounds like one. Not like a 4cyl shaker, but a diesel nonethless. I guess 318d owners need to try to feel good about their cars somehow.
The engine really has me in a bit of a quandry. I like the economy and the midrange torque but I dislike the sound. Unfortunately, the only engine that's going to get me the torque and the sound together is the 6.0 V12 but there is no way I can afford to run one. So, I think maybe more diesels will be in my future for daily drivers.

So, to sum up after 3000 miles.

Dislikes:
High-beam assist. It's just too slow.
i-drive brightness at night
Engine sound at idle
Navigation system is absolutely rubbish (I use my iphone instead)
Stereo isn't very good. I am taking steps to fix this

So, all in all I'm happy. We shall see what the next 12 months brings as far as running costs are concerned. I have a service coming up in 2000 miles for a brake fuid change and cabin filter.

Odd, there is no law to say the seller must conform to the pricing error. It's their discretion. Either way, if he's stupid enough to not realise that, cha ching for you!

Although to be fair, there are so many E65s kicking around at this price bracket you could have had your pick!

I can't believe how much car you get for the money on the E65. Family friend has one that was spec'd close to £100k (21" wheels, 750i, etc). Went to part ex it and the dealer offered him £13k, It's only 4 years old

You mention the upgrades to the stereo, are you just going to whack an inline amp in? The L7 speakers make a massive difference. You should already have two subs, one under each front seat if it's like the E60

I missed this thread the first time round for some reason.

Very nice Rilot. I have the same thoughts as you re the engine's. I would be more than happy to settle for the oil burner, but like you would be looking to change to the 750i mid term.

Very good price too. Lovely. Hammers home how much i really need to change to one of these with the value on offer. I just need my autobox to explode or something to force me to do it :(
