I have a laptop that keeps turning off unexpectantly. The power just completly dies. Have scanned and removed viruses and it still hasnt cured it. Doesnt seem to be overheating either.

It is a Hp compaq

Any suggestions??

sounds like either dodgy battery, isnt actually charging? but if its happening on the mains it might be over heating, if it has one of those exhaust grills get some compressed air and give it a good blowing *tee hee hee*

be sure that grill isnt obstructed or anything when you are using it aswell

thanks for the replys.

The hard drive is overheating big time but would this shut the laptop off completly??

Yep

As mentioned... check the fan intakes/exhausts for gunk and grime. Try to use on a flat surface (not your knees/lap) with plenty of air gap all round. The lappy that I'm writing this on has a warm area just under my right wrist at the mo. So laptop HDD do tend to be prone to heat issues! :)

Well not necessarily, it may be a problem with internal cooling rather than the drive itself so you may have exactly the same heat issues with a new one in there.

I've opened a few laptops and found a layer of "dust/fibre carpet" over the inside edge of the heatsink. The clue would be the fan running all of the time without actually feeling any hot air come out of the vent. Not sure if that'd make it power off though.

Yup. Had a very similar issue with one of my older laptops recently. Took it apart and the heatsink was almost completely clogged with dust. They can be a pain to dismantle but think it's worth checking. As well as using the fan as a clue (good tip above) does it shut down after a certain time or when you are running anything particularly CPU intensive? These can be signs of overheating also.
