My Turn: Car Crash

Just got off the phone to RSA.

They say it takes around 8 working days from recovery of the vehicle to a settlement being offered. So, looks like i won't know anything about it until this time next week :(

Car is worth at the most 1.5k. More likely they will come back with something sub 1k as first offer.

I will settle somewhere in the middle if it comes to that.

No idea of the daily hire rate.
I can't see them authorising the repair. Did you have any intention to sale the car? If not then hopefully you can buy it back and have a repair done similar to Gaijin, I know you're handy with spanners so could probably bolt on a bumper or such and pocket a few quid for the inconvenience.

He drove into the side of your car. Where was he looking?.
This has been my thought exactly. Even an unobservant driver who fails to check mirrors surely looks in front at least? When his wife/partner jumper out of the car and started to have a pop at me I did feel pretty frustrated but in hindsight it's quite amusing. I did ask her if she knew what the white line and triangle painted on the road meant.

Malt, the third party in my accident is insured with RSA so perhaps the same is true for me. Unsure how it works with HelpHire involved too.

I used to live just off chessel street in bedminster and used to take that side road to work every day and pull out and go left to go up past st mary redcliffe.

Was he pulling out with the attention of going right towards temple meads ?

If you let him out surely he would have pulled out infront of you not driven into your rear?

If he was pulling out and going right my guess is he was looking right and thought you had passed.

I think repair is out of the question. I could possibly buy it back and strip it for parts to sell, but its a lot of work, and I don't have a huge amount of space anymore.
To be honest I think it's done me a favour.
I could not see me selling it (liked driving it too much) and I should really be driving someone sensible with the milage I am doing at the moment. Just having this loaner diesel passat is showing me how much money I have been spending on fuel!

I imagine the processes will be similar, if not identical. So, provided fault is not disputed, should be about the same time-scales :)

CraigN, I believe he was turning right or intending to. Unsure how he missed a white van in front of him. Also, unsure if he was actually able to see down the road to the right as the vehicles in left lane would have blocked his view. Plus, he should check the oncoming traffic a little more closely. I think he is just a poor driver or had a 5 minute concentration lapse.

Directline may well be 60% but the third party in this case is with RSA, any idea on their policies?

Clear cut, he is at full liability regardless of scenario, he pulled out of a junction, hit someone whilst doing so... No 2 ways about it.

He's behind a give way.

And he didn't.

Numpty.

Without knowing the road at that time in the morning its hard to comment on things like that.

The road Tesla was on is always solid during rush hour and most decent folk do not block the junction so cars coming out can turn right and cars coming in the opposite direction can turn down the side road.

Coming up that road most people will turn left as it is commonly used as a rat run to avoid the Bedminster high street which is just off the left of Teslas picture.

Those turning left out of that road will not give way if decent people are waiting for the lights to change and they will nudge out. By that i mean this is what i used to do at that junction :P else you will never get out at that time in the morning.

However the guy it seems was turning right and not looking were he was going. His fault.

There's no two ways about it, he was behind a give way line - the traffic and road conditions don't matter in the slightest.

A give way is there for a reason. You sit there until you can exit safely, or someone lets you out.

Impatience is no excuse.

I called the body shop late yesterday afternoon and they said they haven't submitted anything to the insurers yet as need to get the van on some machine to check alignment.

He said to call back Tuesday PM as they should have submitted their quote by then and hopefully heard back too.

You can see how hire car charges mount up in these situations!

Followed up the bodyshop again. They have now submitted a quote and awaiting written confirmation to repair or not.

I asked the quote cost and the chap said £2250 + VAT.

Is it worth me speaking with the third party insurance assessor regarding write off? Is this even a possibility?

If the van value is 3k, and you are looking at nearly £2650 in total.

Thats 88% of the van's value. That, I would imagine is a probably a clear write off in 99% of cases!

WIth RSA, they will look at the quote, and probably move the car to their own storage yard for the assesor to look at. They will check the damage against the quote, and asses the condition of the vehicle, and make an offer to you.
You can challenge this offer and provide proof of your own valuation using adverts of similar vehicles for example.

Thanks guys. I am familiar with the offer system as helped a friend with proving value of his Focus recently.

I guess I'll just hold tight and wait. I have some work lined up in London this week so don't wan't to be without a vehicle for that so am not complaining if they take a few more days.

Malt, how is your claim progressing? If at all?

Any idea what "scrap" value of the van would be worth assuming it's cat c/d?
