Sennheiser HD555 to HD595 an upgrade? I certainly say yes!

Similar, not the same. There's a big difference in frequency response for the driver units:

12-38000Hz vs 15-28000Hz

The frequency limits of the human ear are generally considered to be between 20Hz and 20KHz. For a young person.

Obviously there are other factors in how a speaker sounds, just saying.

The 555s are naturally bassier headphones, the 595s are not but the bass has more detail, the kickdown is meatier yet the boom is lesser - it's just more natural and feels more relaxed at everything you listen to.

Edit*
But yeah this is still not settled in yet so I expect the 595s to be even better once they've aged a bit just like the 555s did.

Nice thread, I own a pair of 555s had them for a few years now, at the time i bought them it was a big choice between these or the 595s but they were just a bit out of my price range at the time..

Love these 555s to bits, but reading your post has now re-awakend the old argument about getting a pair of 595s :(

Hope they give you lots of sound enjoyment the 555s are a nice bit of kit for the price but it sounds like the 595s are just that little bit more special coming from someone who has actualy used both..

Not very badly....Once on your head the sound is cushioned in your head anyway, if you take them off your head they're obviously going to be loud as the sound is not being cushioned by anything.

Through my HTC Desire they sounded just fine but with some adjusting of EQ via DSP Manager in the phone it sounded even better.

I don't think anyone has heard the 558s yet but Bass is very good and meaty on the 595s but not boomy like it is on the 555s (you'd only tell the difference if you've had the 555s for a while and sampled the same music!).

The 595 bass is just more precise and punchy.

Been through this already but yeah I have read that before and didn't feel the need to post it because my own findings were that the sound colour given output both headphones is a fair bit different and threads like that would just confuse people further.

What's more reliable, something inconclusive or actual real world usage reports with user confirmed replies above? ;)

Inconclusive technical photos are still more reliable to me than the subjective opinion of consumers desperately seeking to justify their purchase ;). Especially since the Sennheiser part numbers for the drivers appear to be the same.

Regardless of the part numbers the enclosures are slightly differnt, the 595 grille recess goes a bit deeper as well. IIRC the 555/595 driver unit is also used on a HD2x heaphone, the 280Pro if I remember right. This doesn't mean the phones are the exact same.

It's like Intel CPUs, the high end parts that don't cut it in lab testing get badged to a lower model number rather than being binned as they work perfectly fine in that model designation specification. It's a sound business model.

Plus, what have I got to justify? I buy stuff and return them if they're not good enough for me all the time and post my findings here. If I don't like something it gets sent back, this is what I do and I post my thoughts on this forum and some other technical forums and I don't think you quite realise this even though you've been here since 2003.

I have the 555's, done the mod where you remove the rubber in the cups and they sound great, I did consider the 595's but after reading about the 555 mod and that basically the 555's have the same internals as the 595's my mind was made up. Build quality is not so great, second pair of 555's where the plastic is starting to crack, same will be true of the 595's.
