The old UK Friday release date has pretty much started to go out the window now that console gaming has become so huge and simultaneous worldwide releases are prevalent.
I doubt the shops are complaining though, as I believe Tuesday is supposed to be the quietest shopping day of the week (aside from Sunday obviously) so it gets people through the doors!
It is interesting to wonder why it became the case in the US though, as obviously Monday (like with DVDs) and Friday make good sense as they are both at the start or end of the working week.
I can only guess that it's because stock being delivered to a store might not be there Monday morning, or in time to go out on the shelves. By having it delivered Monday they can ensure that stock is on the shelves for the next morning. It perhaps not so relevant now, but may go back to when deliveries weren't so timely or some such.
