Howdy,

Over the road from me is a house with an old car in the drive getting gradually covered with weeds and stuff.

The car is probably worth scrap value, but it has an interesting plate.

???? AMG

Would it be worth getting the car then selling the plate to a Merc AMG owner?

I did this before with a £50 mini. The plate on that was

MEL ?50W - MEL or MELLOW - was worth a grand about 7 years ago.

What are the bits you ???? out?

Cheapest AMG plate on DVLA is 800 quid for a random LLNN AMG.

It depends what the '????' part is. If it is something random eg. 'F123 AMG' then its probably not worth much. If however it is something relevant to Mercs, specifically AMG Mercs eg 'E55 AMG' then it would be worth a lot.

It will also be worth a reasonable amount if its simply a letter followed by a low number eg. 'N1 AMG' etc.

The ???? are the bits I can't remember, so I'll pop out later and have a lookie.

I doubt it would be relevant to a current model, but I'll soon find out.

Bear in mind it needs an MOT and tax to remove the plate as far as i know.

Ok,

The numbers are 540 - So either I stick it on my car cos I drive a BMW 540i and confuse people who say "that is not an AMG what a berk"

Or try to find a Merc owner with a 540bhp AMG Merc :-)

So are you saying the whole number is 540 AMG or is there a letter before the numbers?

Best plate I've ever seen was S63 AMG on a black S-Class (of course). Must have cost him a fair bit.

Interesting, my auntie and uncle currently have T63 AMG on their E36 and have often thought about getting it valued with a view to selling.

One of the directors of my employers has "ST 08 ART" on his company car, it was a £250 plate from the DVLA but the DVLA recognised its potential value

Another great looking plate was ST08 ART. We wondered before the start of the auction if the Stobart Group would be interested in this and it seems we were right. Steve O'Conner has a 5% share in the group and is the Executive Director in charge of its Ports Division. Mr O'Connor paid £43,348.75 for ST08 ART. He also purchased two other unrelated plates at the auction.

I wonder which price was the correct one?

That plate is probably worth more than enough to buy them a tidy e46 !

My dad picked up the plate r3lay about 5 or 6 years ago for 500 quid with a view to sell it on. He never found a buyer so put it on my first car.

I sold it two years ago for £3000. Was worth more than my car!
