Just installed and having a play. The main pain in the ass is that you need to set everything up again from scratch post-wipe, but it seems very nice despite this!

it is a nice rom though no problems without a wipe
i am glad its being kept alive by the modding community at least

I dug out my old HTC Hero on Orange tonight and wanted to stick 2.1 on it as my dad wants a new phone and I said he could have that.
Google and 20 mins later I have a rooted HTC Hero running Android 2.1, and what an improvement it is! It's basically just like the Desire but on slightly older hardware.
I stand by my opinion that this is the phone to buy for anyone on a sub £200 budget.
Shame there is no free method to unlock it though...Damn Orange
I've got to say i've had mine for 3 weeks now, £159.99 from 3 plus £15 to unlock it (decided it was quicker and easier than scouring the nets) and i'm loving it. I've not done anything to it but would like to change themes perhaps at some stage.
Its running 1.5 right now... would you definitely recommend upgrading to 2.1? I need to read up on the change logs really. Would appreciate any links you could provide as to the upgrade

i did the ota upgrade on my '3' htc hero to 2.1 and it went flawlessly. whats even better is i have now rooted it simply using universal androot v1.6.2 b5. prior to this i had not been able to root it at all to get access to installing different roms.

I would say it is certainly worth it, I actually greatly dislike the 1.5 software in comparison.
Once I setup 2.1, it was just like turning on a HTC Desire..... except a little bit slower, but you won't notice that as you haven't compared it with a Desire.
Definitely worth it.

I would think so, yeah, as you normally have to wipe the device for everything to function properly.
You can back most of it up though so it can be sorted if its important.

i lost all my contacts and setting but it wasn't a problem for contacts as they were auto saved to google account. if you don't do this atm you should as it's great for quick restarting or if you lose the phone or for nxt upgrade
Yeah sadly I made some kind of error and didn't sync it properly.. plus it doesnt appear to work if the contacts are saved as "phone" rather than "google".
Luckily I dont have many friends so shouldn't take long to replenish my contacts over time.

Is it now possible to use an unlock code to, well, unlock a hero operating on 2.1 with orange, as I herd their was an issue with the software from orange that ment not even the codes they supplied worked?
Just dont want to go paying orange for a code, waiting 10 days to get the code, only to find it doesnt work.

So I have unlocked my hero, but I had to go back to 1.5 to do it (2.73.61.66) Now how do I get the ota updates to go to 2.1, because the update message is not poping up?

have you tried any faster kernels? I've currently left mine at 729mhz but I first tried the 768mhz one, just fails to boot up and constantly restarts :/
