Hi

Ive just played my first play of Mafia 2 and im not overly impressed with the GPU performance?

Game is a little jerky sometimes especially when in Joes flat and the whole game sometimes is a tad jerky at times, best way to describe it its a little like Fallout 3 and Oblivion game engine, well it feels like it?

It feels like the game is always trying to load thats why the game is jerky sometimes?

Is the game a little buggy or is it just me or is it the game engine that 2k have used?

Im gaming at 1920 by 1080p

All settings are on max and Vsync is off,APEX physx is off on the menu screen, turning shadows down has no impact.

Dont get my wrong the game is far from unplayable id just expect a super smooth experience using the best single card available when playing a DX9 game.

I don't have the full game but with the demo and physx clothes mod or with physx off and max settings I was averaging well over 80 FPS.

Have you anything running in the background?

nothing out of the ordinary tbh

Spofify Nod 32 MSI Afterburner Steam

now that raven has pointed out its a console port that explains it,this game reminds of GVA IV so much with sudden slow downs oh and my frames are very good so the issue here is yet again another poor console port imo

I have SC2 to install and play so that might be a better bet that playing this

i played through the whole game on a gtx 480 with max settings except anti aliasing off and the npc cloth tweak for physx at 1680x1050 with 3D vision enabled and i can't remember it dropping below 30fps once and it probably averaged about 40fps.

so you should definitely be getting better performance, i thought the engine was stunning really with excellent performance and looks but i guess any game that even remotely taxes a pc these days gets labelled as poorly coded or a console port

As ive said my frames are very high that is not the issue.

fair enough but to call it a poor console port is just ridiculous, have you even seen the console version running? its like a completely different game almost and by that i mean worse in almost every possible way and by a big margin

No i haven't,maybe im being a little fussy as ive said the game is more than playable and the game is not jerky very often.

I just like to play games super smooth and this game is not like that, console ports are 9 times out of 10 poor like GTA IV for instance which is what M2 reminds me of regarding the jerkiness.

Funny as all my games installed are not having any issues, christ i can run Metro 2033 and the game feels smoother than M2.

Another example Assassin creed 2 is another poor console port which has the same issues M2 has on my system, coincidence ?

bee it is a console port, one look at the textures and details says it all, why do you think a game released on the PC in 2010 is DX9 only....console port.

And of course the PC version will run faster, and look better with the higher res, it's like your 480 v a 7800 GTX in the PS3.

so because they didn't massively up the texture resolution it's a console port?? what other things make it a console port? dirt 2 is a console port absolutely, just because they tacked on dx11 doesn't make it any less so. it's just the same old whining at pretty much every single game released these days, out of curiosity can someone name say the last 5 pc games that you feel weren't poorly coded or console ports?

It's DX9, that says it all really, I can't see how it could not be described as anything but a console port with physx bolted on, below screen shows the complete lack of graphical detail that PC gamers find very console like.

well no it doesn't say that at all, also it's incredibly easy to take a random screenshot of the greatest looking games out there that make them look not so great, so i don't care about cherry picked screens, i could post another 100 3D screens to contradict that one

every multi platform game that doesn't use dx10 or 11 is a lazy port yeah? even though they add incredibly little to the graphical fidelity/performance of the majority of games, albeit there are a few exceptions

Personally i'm not to fussed if a game looks slightly worse than it could have, just because it's multiplatform, it's the gameplay that counts

From my experiance of playing PC and Xbox 1 and 2 games, the PC versions are by and large a lot better

Halo 1 was a lot better on the PC imo with much sharper graphics and a much higher framerate, dont get me wrong it was ace on the 360 too, but if you had a decent PC, the PC version was better imo

Mass Effect, again great on Xbox, but the PC version looked sharper, and more importantly due to the action/FPS kinda style it had a much smoother framerate, which made combat more fluid

Dragon Ages, again looks better and runs much smoother

I have not played Mafia 2 yet, i have the code for a free download, from my 470 but have not got round to it, yet from screens i seen i fully expect the PC version to look and run much nicer than the console versions

Same was true of Oblivion etc etc, unless the PC port is really poor, it's usually offers superior graphics and framerates

I think the flip side of the coin needs to be looked at here, you only have to see how inferior many PC to console ports are, to see who's getting the good deal here, my experiances of the console versions of Half life, populas, Doom 3, civilization, Touring cars etc was that the PC originals was usually streets ahead

Most Console to PC ports = better on PC

Most PC to console ports = better on PC

Most multiplatform games = best version on PC

why all the grumbles?

I think the problem Raven is trying to getting at is that the texture resolution should be a lot higher on the pc than the consoles. There is no real excuse for such textures (like the ones shown in Ravens screenshot above) to exist on the PC version of the game.

Examples like Dirt 2, JC2 and Metro 2033 show what happens when a game is ported properly. All three games have a plethora of graphical/quality settings available to the gamer which when maxed out offer graphical quality far in excess of what the console version of the game can achieve (assuming of course that you have the hardware to run such settings).

Mafia II has very limited settings available in game for the gamer to change (it has no texture setting for example...). Things like this only add fuel to the fire of the 'bad port' comments.

gta 4 has incredible texture resolution at the high setting and has a lot of adjustable graphical settings, yet its still an appalling port. dirt 2 is a console port with effects tacked on that are way way less impressive than either of the the nvidia settings in mafia 2.

why is just cause 2 a great pc game? and not a dodgy port?

What impressive effects in mafia 2? you mean the tacked on physx support and what....3D, sorry but Dirt 2 runs in DX11 has a plethora of adjustable IQ settings and looks great, same can't be said of mafia 2.

how is the tacked on physx support in mafia 2 any different to the tacked on dx11 support of dirt 2? why does a massive amount of settings sliders make a great port? for example the pc versions of capcom games have relatively few sliders yet are fantastic pc games at least graphically
