;) Hey everyone, First post here, Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Ok so here's the crack, I'm after a reference design HD5850 (cannot be ASUS) for my EK FC HD5850 waterblock that I already have.

I called Overclockers and asked if they could check the stock of the HD5850's and tell me if they have any reference design HD5850's, and if they do could they reserve one for me and I would buy it straight away.

The guy I spoke to said that he couldn't give me this infomation as I may receive a different card when I place my order ( Even though I said "reserve one for me")
I'm not sure If I'm allowed to type other PC E-tailer names, but needless to say I asked around a lot and most E-tailers didn't know what a reference design card was.... :(

So Do Overclockers have any reference design HD5850's?

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

Ok I'll post this in the Customer Service section then, I've tried luck of the draw twice and got unlucky twice, It costs me £10 to send a card back and then there's a restocking fee.... So I'm Not to keen on trying my luck again. Soon I won't have enough money to buy a HD5850 lol.

Surely its not too much to ask for someone to call the warehouse and ask if they have any reference design HD5850's, is it?

Anyway thanks for your post. I'll ask in Customer Service.

restocking fee are illigal in the uk, heads up

Out of interest why not Asus? anyways from looking on the site they don't have any (in fact the XFX design looks hideous), but it's always worth calling again to check. I know they had the odd 1 or 2 reference 5870s on the site a couple of weeks back so it's not out of the question. However the best bet would be fleabay, MM (need 250 posts though) or keep checking the clearance line section and see what sort of warranty you can get with it. That's what I'd do if I was after one mate.

I had a Reference Design ASUS card and I couldn't flash its BIOS to one I had made in RBE. The same flashing process worked perfectly on my Gigabyte HD5850....

Could take awhile to get 250 posts lol, I've been searching for one on tomshardware and the bay, but there either really expensive or live in the U.S.

Thanks for your help so far

 Oh wow... I didn't know that, Thanks for letting me know. I've been charged it many a time...

No worries i have a very large legal team where i work they come very handy :)
Even if terms on a website say by buying from you accept our T&C there are some things that are still protected by uk law making their T&C worth nothing :p

I also was after a reference 5850, I even brought the sapphire 5850 from OcUK because the manufacturer's code listed was for a reference design, only to get a non-reference once sent instead.

In the end I concluded that I simply wasn't going to find a new non-reference card, and brought a Sapphire 5850 Vapor-X instead, which I'm very happy with. You will probably have to buy a used card to get a reference design now.

Yeah I've kinda given up now, Overclockers.co.uk said they don;t have any reference design cards in stock, no one else even got back to me. Might see if I can sell my Gigabyte HD5850 and buy a HD5970 or wait for the 6xxx series card to be released.

Mind you I don't really need the performance, Just got bitten bad by the upgrade bug.... Damn it lol.

Glad your happy with your Vapor-X I've always liked their coolers, unfortunately it has to be a reference for me as I've got a waterblock already...

Sell the waterblock and get a vapor-x or Toxic these babies run very cool. Will cost about £250 though.:D

The 5850 Vapor-X is actually currently £225 on OcUK, while the 5850 Toxic is £270!! This price difference is crazy, when the Vapor-X can be so easily overclocked to Toxic levels (765/4500).

I've been very impressed with the Vapor-X cooling (40 degrees idle, about 60-65 max at load, and my case isn't particularly well ventilated either), although I imagine the waterblock would still blow it away. You could wait for the 6800 series and hope/pray that your waterblock fits one of those, though of course you could just end up waiting months for nothing.

If you are intent on using the waterblock I would advise getting a used reference design 5850, I have seen some around for okay prices.

Yeah trouble with watercooling is the GPU blocks seem really hard to sell... But the temps are amazing, got my Gigabyte card at 1000 Core 1200Mem 1.225V and it idles at 26C and loads at 32C lol. And thats with a Core i7 920 @4.00Ghz 1.30000V in the same loop.

The Vapor's are really nice, but I already have the water loop so I might aswell Put my GPU(s) in the loop aswell.

Thanks for your replies guys.

If your going to be removing the cooler and voiding your warranty why not just pick up a cheap 5850 on the bay/mm. I picked my reference 5870 up for £195 and fitted an ek block to it :)

I've looked on the bay and they really arent that cheap... Think I'll just wait for the 6xxx series in a few months.

If you've got a decent gpu for in the meantime then yeh I'd just say wait and see what happens with the 6xxx series. However if you need something now I'd have a look at the nvidia gpus and sell your ek block. I wouldn't base a gpu purchase entirely on what ek block you've got.

I've got a Gigabyte HD5850 @ 1000Core 1200Mem So I'm in no rush to upgrade, I'll just sell the waterblock and sell my HD5850 when the 6xxx series come out.

Looking into the distance selling laws, they also have to refund the original delivery charge as well.

You do have to pay for the postage back however. a lot of e-tailers in the UK make a tidy profit from people not knowing the law about returning items :)
