Hi guys,

Want to build a quiet, fast PC under £500 - not interested in gaming so graphics aren't important :)

How does this look? Also, don't want AMD...

Thanks!

Personally Id go for this instead

Intel Core i5 650 3.20GHz (Clarkdale) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail £140.99 (£119.99)
Antec P183 Super Midi Tower Case - Gun Metal Black £99.99 (£85.10)
G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (F3-12800CL8D-4GBRM) £82.24 (£69.99)
Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2H Intel H55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 microATX Motherboard £66.99 (£57.01)
Corsair CX 400W ATX Power Supply (CMPSU-400CXUK) £32.99 (£28.08)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST3500418AS) £29.99 (£25.52)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler (Socket 939 / AM2 / AM3 / 775 / 1156 / 1366) £18.99 (£16.16)
Pioneer DVR-S18L 22x DVD±RW SATA Labelflash ReWriter - Black (Retail) £17.99 (£15.31)
Total £490.16

With a decent quiet case and an aftermarket cooler it will be much quieter, also using built in gfx as its more than adequate

If he's got the money might as well get the quad. If he wanted to save a bit then the i3 would make more sense than the i5 650 considering the i3 overclocks a fair bit on the stock cooler.

£9 difference for a quad core= win

as for a quiet pc, are the stock coolers supplied with the i3, i5 6** and i5 7** different?

no but I included an after market cooler and antec P series case = quieter system
And its not just £9 more, cos youve also got the cost of gfx card to account for, so its £50 more

i was talking about the price difference of the individual cpus.

if the OP spec is what he can afford, then whats the problem, once the ram has been changed for the corsair, its approximately £20 more than your spec, and faster.

No problem, I was just giving him another option, he gets a much quieter system with minimal loss in performance, it depends which is his priority, but given his only stated desire was quiet, I tend to think my option is better suited to his needs, thats all
