Karl Pilkington - An Idiot Abroad

I think people get confused about the scripted side of things.

Anyone who has listened to all the XFM shows must know deep down that Karl is not scripted- I think at best he deliberately tells stupid Monkey News to wind Ricky up but that's it.

The reason the podcasts sound scripted is because they are - basically they rehashed the funny parts from the XFM shows and retold them.

You got it in one mate!

You can tell that Karl is playing up to p*** off Gervais or just annoyed at Gervais' im-always-right attitude. So he's saying things to get him riled up, I can 100% guarantee you it's not scripted. Not a chance on Earth,

That's why I love it because Gervais flat out is embarrassed when the shows are recorded at how little effort he put in and how terrible it must be for the listeners. Then Karl says he doesn't want his name on the show cos it's a shambles, telling Gervais it's a pile of crap. That to me shows how talented they are, they aren't even putting any effort into this show and it's possibly Gervais' best ever work.

Yeah I agree, I'd transcript this show because it truly is the funniest radio show in existance on planet Earth.

You do realise that means that you think that Gervais thinks Karl is believing his own stories
Gervais is being taken in by his own character he has helped to make?
Please don't believe that - it sounds too stupid.

I'll add something else to the mix of this brilliant funny SHOW.
Every now and then Gervais will come out with something that he is definitely reading from a Wikipedia entry or similar.
I'll make one up for now -
So Karl, you're saying Vladimir Ilyich Lenin who who was a Russian Marxist revolutionary and communist politician who led the October Revolution of 1917 and as a leader of the Bolsheviks, he headed the Soviet state during its initial years as it fought to establish control of Russia in the Russian Civil War and worked to create a socialist economic system - so you're saying he was a bit good? laughter laughter laughter.

This goes on so many times.
Just listen to the show, it's a masterpiece of worked out comedy like all his shows are.

dmpoole... I love you man.

Gervais just remembers that stuff off the top of his head. It's only ever about anthropology or history, but he talks quite passionately about them and Merchant is the same too (he's more into art and philosophy). My wife and her entire family are the same, they just have ridiculously good memories and especially if it's regarding a passionate subject.

There's no way they had time to plan such a masterpiece. Why would they for a poxy poorly paid show on a tin box radio station like XFM. Gervais was working on the office and extras, how would he find the time and why would he bother when he's already established. What possible credit would he receive from putting in all that effort on a crappy radio station that only broadcasts to a tiny area (especially if he's already established).

OK - you win.
Carry on believing that Pilkington really does believe his own Monkey News stories and that Gervais also believes that Pilkington believes them to.
However others have stated that Pilkington does it to wind up Gervais who hasn't worked it out for all those series so who is right?
In fact I don't want to know because it will be BS.
You can also carry on believing in Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy while you're at it.

And Gervais wouldn't have to put a lot of work in.
They know what they are going to talk about and he can pull the info down in seconds.
They also bring up subjects that he has already wrote about and read from his diary before the show - they even tell you this.

I must admit it took me until the 2nd series before I realised it was worked out (not scripted).
It was when Pilkington was talking about chameleons and said something like - Stay in the forest, be green, be safe.
Genius.

You're wrong, people have delivered all the reasons why but rather than counter those you merely stick to off the cuff ad hominems.

So you also believe that Pilkington believes his Monkey News stories?

Or do you think (as some have suggested) that he is winding Gervais up who hasn't caught on yet?

Or do you think these are 3 blokes who have sat down and thought of a really good format?

Do you think that Pilkington is some kind of learning needs/autistic person who doesn't know that the world is laughing at him but carries on like some X-Factor contestant?

Did he leave XFM as Head Of Production because he was told to or do you think he sat down and thought he had got a fan base who would buy into his genius (even though some of them think he's for real)?

I'm with you dmpoole. Gervais appears to be a clever bloke, he would obviously know that Karl didn't actually think that a couple would buy a child from the internet, then a couple of months later realise it was a Monkey.

Karl finds the most ridiculous stories he can find, Gervais pretends to be amazed that karl believes them.

But the rest of the show is very good.

It's definitely not illegal. XFM themselves hosted every single episode on their website for free download. They originally held each show in the separate segments as they spoke between the music/ads.

I'm not sure why they no longer host the show, you'd think that much attraction to your site could be monopolised.

They sell the shows on iTunes now so they probably don't want to advertise the fact you can download them for free.

Is there anything out there at all similar to these? I'm on the last episode of season 2 and sad its coming to an end. Now Karls got his kitchen :(.

I wouldn't mind hearing the shows where Karl was absent as well. The ones on youtube are just the shows with Karl in. I'd imagine it isn't as funny without Karl though.

There was one good one where they phone Karl up to find out why he wasn't in, can't remember what episode it was from though. Though i am sure it's on youtube somewhere.

Mark A, go to pilkipedia, the ones sans Karl are on there, they're still good, Ricky and Steve have great chemistry
