Hi guys, just purchased the Vauxhall Insignia SE 1.8. Does anyone own one of these give me any more info on them? I didn't get to play with all the buttons and not sure I can wait until Thursday to find out :(
I have buttons near the handbrake too, and like a knob to turn.. this don't come as standard so wondered what these were too.

Cheers
Chris.

I'm looking to get the 2 litre diesel 160bhp SRI
Or
The 2.8 V6 petrol (maybe the VXR depending on price, seen a 10 plate for £16k with 5000 miles on the clock)

:)

The knop controls the options on the computer/sat nav

Loads of buttons, but you'll get used to it quickly.

The dash setup is pretty good on the insignia imo, it sort of wraps around.

If i remember correctly, you might have a button for the electric handbrake next to the gear lever, then the climate controls next up. After that I think its the dial for the main car options, like lighting/door locks etc etc. Top one i think is the dab dial/buttons.

Odd choice, this paticular market is one of the few where the diesel really can be argued to be the 'no brainer' choice given the 1.8 NASP petrol isn't really anything special.

When I were younger, I always thought I'd grow up to be pretty unspectacular. I always thought that I'd be average in every way, and it's something I was also slightly scared of (I'd rather fail miserable or succeed greatly).

Over time I realise that the average is quite low. It's lower than I ever thought it would be. I guess as a child, the average seems quite high. People have jobs, and cars, and do things and tell you "because I said so" and you assume they have some superior intellect and experience that makes them qualified to make such a claim.

Reading about someone buying a brand new Vauxhall without knowing anything about it beyond the fact it's a 1.8 SE makes me feel spectacular. I think life is going to be easier than I first imagined.

I think its just that he doesnt know all the buttons...

I may be wrong (potential here :) ) but I would like to think he knows a bit more about that car other than the model name

I had a look at the interior of one in a carpark yesterday.

I have to say, the interior looks so much better than other recent Vauxhalls I have seen. It certainly didn't look cheap.

I would just wait until Thrusday until you can have the car - You have already bought it anyway:p.

Half the population buys their car this way

They walk into a car showroom and and say "i'll have that one please" without any sort of test driving or research.

My sister in law was the same. When the brother in law went out to buy a car, he went out all day looking round and came back not having bought one. She went ballistic at him for "wasting a whole day" and couldnt for the life of her understand why he hadnt bought a car. As far as she saw it, you have X to spend, walk into the car lot, find a car for less than x then buy it. They had a huge blazing row with her refusing to back down. To her a car is a car just like milk is milk. Thats how mr + mrs average buy cars.

I guess I equate purchasing things with money as purchasing things with my time. Until I work for myself, it's time that I've had to spend working for others. It's my labour. I often buy expensive things, but I don't think I would ever buy something as expensive as a car without thoroughly researching it. It's not even the fact that it's a car - it could be a holiday, a house, a boat, a computer, a watch - whatever. Spending that sort of money without really knowing what you are getting, just seems to me to be tantamount to saying your time is worthless.

Often these people, who are also often poor, try to argue back that life isn't all about money. They are right, it isn't. Life is all about enjoyment and satisfaction, family and loved ones. However, the old adage that "time is money" works in reverse, money is time. If you have money, it's more time you can spend doing those things that life is about.

You are thinking about this from your own mind though, where a nice motor matters.
To most people, cars are cars. They don't notice how one drives different to another. Is this a bad thing? No.

Agreed, my old man still buys new cars every 3 years no matter what I say... hes happy enough tho

In saying that, he is starting to show weakness a little... when I got my A8 it pained him that I paid less for it compared to the price of a new Insignia or similar

No, read my second post. It is not the fact that this is a car. It's not the fact that I like a nice car - hell, my car cost an eighth of what his probably just did. It has everything to do with the fact that converting a huge amount of your time/money in to a massively depreciating asset (and as you have said, most people don't actually gain any enjoyment from that asset) is a little bit silly.

I gain little enjoyment from watching TV. Occasionally, I watch TV for the news or a particular programme I am interested it. As a consequence of this, I don't have a TV, I just watch it on my computer monitor. Spending a huge amount of my income on something I don't enjoy, would be the equivalent of me buying a 50" plasma TV with 7.1 surround sound to watch the news. Sure, if I'm loaded - why not? But the people who go around buying very average, but brand new and very expensive cars are usually not loaded.

It's like not enjoying different foods, yet dining at The Fat Duck every night.

Sorry for late reply. Busy weekend.

I do know everything I need to know about the car. I was purely asking about the buttons, Perhaps my post wasn't very clear.
I've done plenty of reserch and the diesel is better *quicker* if you call that better. We wanted a family car so we dont intend on ripping up the roads etc. We replaced a Astra SXI 1.9 CDTI. I'm not sure what the difference will be in the drive, I will find out on Thursday. The reason we didn't test drive was we arrived at 5:00pm and managed to negotiate the car from £13500 to £10500 with a £50 deposit. That wasn't easy and took time!

He leasing or buying/selling?

Please don't tell me he's one of these people who "do it because it needs mot'ing every year now now" or "it's going to start falling to bits"?
