I'm looking for a few ideas on a wide lens for a 5D2 - mainly for landscapes and just generally a wider reach. I have the 24-70 already, so want to avoid too much overlap.

The 10-22 would have been my first choice, however it is an EF-s and doesn't fit. I used to have the Canon 20mm, however it wasn't quite wide enough.

Any ideas?

Well Canon have just released their new Canon EF 8-15mm f4.0 L USM Fisheye Lens :)

Preorder prices are around £1500 though - ouch!

Then there is the Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8L USM mkII Lens, but that gives you 16mm of overlap - thats around £998.

Sigma do a 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 EX DG for £650 - I believe this will fit full frame sensors, but you would have to double check it prior to purchase. This lens would give you no overlap with the lens you already have.

Edit - looks like the Sigma 12-24 does fit Full Frame, I've added a couple of Flickr groups that have examples - threads for the groups give a bit of information on how that lens handles as well.

sigma's 10-20 EX is very good.

About the same price as the canon 20. A mate has one that I've bowered several times and love it.

Just can't afford one myself :(

If your on a budget the 12-24 from sigma is so wide you won't believe it if you have never used a wide angle lens before. The new canon 8-15mm lens if it is in your budget. This will give you a fish eye on the widest settings which can be corrected or a wide angle image at the 15mm end. I've heard good things about the 16-35mm but again as with the 8-15mm is very expensive.

It depends what you can afford...

Thanks chaps - much appreciated. I'd rather keep it around £500 - £600 if I can, so those Sigmas look decent.

If you need the f/2.8 you might be able to get hold of the old 17-35L which is f/2.8 for about £525-550. The 16-35LI is about £650-£700 IIRC?

I though it was a fisheye? So all the results will need correcting.

The 12-24 must be mad on FF!!

Indeed, the 17-40 L is a nice and reasonably priced option but it's a big overlap with a 24-70, I wouldn't carry both. Petition Canon to produce a copy of the Nikon 14-24?

Which end of your 24-70 do you use the most? If it's mostly the wide end, you might find that you can carry just a 17-40 and not miss your 24-70 at all—I know I could, it's a pretty perfect range.

(And if it's mostly the tele end, I'd carry a 70-200 instead. 24-70 is such a middling, boring, nothing range.)

There's always the new Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8. I'm not sure if it's actually on shelves yet although it's been announced so can't be too far away.

Personally I agree, on full frame a 16-35, 50 and 70-200 is a perfect setup. However everyone is different and the 24-70 is a nice all round package, you can always have both at home and take whichever you need on a given day...
