If you broke the car yourself you used to have a tickbox so you could send the V5 in yourself and declare it scrapped. Now you have to take the car to a registered scrapper so they can put it through the system.
Exactly. I don't know why people are having such a hard time understanding that nothing has changed, the V5C has never been proof of ownership - the DVLA have simply made it more obvious.
The old V5C did not "suffice" when it comes to proving ownership and neither does the new one. If you thought it sufficed then that's your problem nobody elses.
I got a new car a little while ago, must have been pretty soon after they introduced them... I **** myself when I opened it, seeing it was bright red and had "EUROPEAN COMMUNITY" on the front I thought I had accidentally bought an import or something!
