Hi all,

The wife and I are considering selling the 3 bedroom semi and looking at getting a property in the sticks with some land.

Looking at getting a self reliant as possible while we both work full/part time.

Anyone done this? growing veg? chickens? pigs etc?

Also, looking at making house energy efficient as possible, solar panels for water, etc.

Anyone any advice or links to good resource websites?

I'd probably start by looking at the site belonging to dick strawbridge, as his work is focused around eco-engineering and 'the good life', and certainly has links to other sites that may give you more info/ideas

Thanks, i'll check this out :)

Is a place in the country with land going to be cheaper than a 3 bed semi in Stoke?

Its less about the cost and more about the lifestyle + starting a family.

I have chickens, very easy to keep, feed is very cheap and the eggs you get are a lot better. They're funny little things at time and even have little personalities. When you have your own roaming around it really makes you think of how badly we treat these animals. Good luck.

I believe there was some government scheme were you could get solar panels insatalled on your house for no cost to you; you get free electric during the day but have to pay at night. Any electric sold back to the electric companies is kept by the installer.

at a risk of going off topic...sorry for the hijack...does anyone have chickens here? in middle suburbia...

grew up on farms and would love some but not sure if it would work...
