I've gone through trying to access a USB portable hard drive manually and I'm going to resort to sending it off to a recovery center. Any one know any good reliable ones?

I assume you have removed it from the usb enclosure and tried it?

also I assume its either dead or not detected / ticking, if its spinning and detected I have seen quite a few ntfs drives that windows cannot even see a partition on or crashes until you force a chkdsk during boot (and it must be attached via ide/sata not usb)

sorry not to answer your question but just checking you have looked at all the options..

you can also get an identical drive and swap the PCB, that obviously only works if the pcb is faulty

I had the date recovered from a failed hd, needed it pretty quick so ended up paying through the nose. Prices varied from a couple hundred quid for a 30 day turnaround to what i paid £1200:( for a few days. think they were called datatrack-labs

the last time i check a month ago they were £200.00 maximum but could be cheaper.

I highly suggest cracking the usb caddy open and plugging the srive directly into your PC before spending any monney. failing that get hold of some drive recovery software - these are excellent.

as sais though - in the event of a hardware issue see link above.

If its hardware, try freezer bag trick, especially if its a small amount of data required :)
I've used this several times in the past to get a drive reading for a few minutes at a time to get the data off.
Used in conjunction with an aircon unit you can extend the readable time quite nicely.
