Q6600 or Q8300

is the q6600 multiplier unlocked? is it just downwards?

i'm considering upgrading my E6750 which is sat at 400 x 8 = 3.2Ghz. I'd like to run the Q6600 at the same frequency if possible? I'm limited by a poor memory and mobo combo..

Yep, 9x400 is good, if you have a chip capable off it. Unfortunately a lot of the last production q6600's were poor clockers, many struggling to go above 3.4ghz, often needing pretty high voltage to get there. A good board really does make all the difference as well, mine wouldnt go above 3.0ghz on an evga 680i a1 board, same cpu in an asus p5q deluxe p45 hit 3.8ghz with a bit of tweaking.

Would be using the stock intel cooler that came with my E6750, so 400 x 8 would probably be about as much as i'd push.

I am in a similar path my self.
A lot a ppl seem to favour Q6600.
I think if you want to clock a q6600 above 3.2 you would need a good mobo.
I find it very hard to get it over 3.4GHz,But I didnt try voltages above 1.425!

If power consumption and temps are main concerns then I guess penryn cpus have an edge.

Just picked up a Q6600 off ebay for £77.. would be happy with 400 x 8.. can I use 8.5 multi?

How much should I sell my E6750 for? is it even worth it? keep it as a spare?

9 multi sounds ambitious.. 3.6ghz from the off? I know it's a G0 but still... oh and i'm not spending extra on cooling:p this was meant to be a cheap upgrade.

Can I use 8.5? Does it go 8,9 or 8,8.5,9?

Pretty simple to FSB clock really, just set the multi to 9, and up the FSB and the vcore until you're happy and close to 400 FSB.

Multi overclocking is easier though IMO. Set the vcore to as high as you want, then just up the multi until it becomes unstable. :P

On my 965BE 1.525v is about as much as this cooler can handle, if I go towards 1.55v my temps start getting a bit high. I got it up to 3.8ghz on my old board, gonna go for 3.9ghz when I get time.

Just keep the 9 x multi and lower the FSB

That way you are not stressing the mobo and ram so much.

Pointless lowering the multi from 9 x with a Q6600

Get it stable at 9x 350 first.

This will give you 3150 mhz a good starting place depending on the chip.

Please don't aske for more advice until you upgrade the stock cooler.

This will limit your clocks significantly

I dont understand why 9 x 350 is a better idea than 8 x 400. The mobo and ram isn't being stressed at all at 400:confused: thats what its rated at?

Wayne my ram is cheapo Micron, 4 x 1gb pc2-6400, and an old asus P5K-SE, the kit isn't great:p

edit: i see where you're coming from now, yes obviously 9 multi is better for beyond 3.2ghz, but as said im happy at 3.2ghz due to using the stock cooler, so if i want 3.2ghz then 400 x 8 makes sense, making the most out of my ram?

i've not really considered running the fsb and ram out of sync..

3.2ghz Q6600 on a dual core stock cooler is stupid.

I'm not going to entertain you any longer as this is just pointless.

The chip will overheat and this will cause stabilty issues.

Then you will be posting back asking for a fix or advice...

Changing the cooler when clocking the 65nm Quads past 3ghz is essential.

I'm out.

Blimey, wasn't long ago you were impressed with my 7900GT volt modding, now you're losing your patience with me because I know what the Q6600 max safe operating temp is.

I was asking why go with 350 x 9 over 400 x 8. I am limited to pretty much 400 due to bad RAM as stated above, why on earth would I even bother with the 9 multi?
