My boss has just told me im not getting paid tomorrow (more info)

I think hes only just found out tbh (thats why the hurried e mail) The company is goverment owned and i really dont think it could go under. The payroll department is filled with .. I hate to say it and come across as racist.. >< but there really thick ****s who cant speak any english and cant communicate -_- When ever you ask them aquestion you just get an evil stair and a shrug -_- doesnt fill you with confidence. Im pretty sure last november they changed the system or something. (I dont understand it tbh).. Funny how they can make sure there pay is fine tho.

Like some of you say. I may just stay till my training peroid is up then leave and find somewhere else. Lots of ppl want I.t geniuses like Mour :D

Sorry about my spelling. I do suffer from dyslexia which can be a problem when writing out on here. I normally put at the start of a message that i do suffer from it, which makes proof reading VERY hard. That combined with my grammer.. i fail lol.

ProTip: Don't schedule your direct debits to go out on or directly after the day you get paid. Leave it a week or so, and try not to blow a month's wages in four days. These things happen from time to time, and this is a simple safeguard that can save you a lot of hassle.

Neil79 has put a note in his sig about it, seemed like a good idea to me.

Very unprofessional on their part. Direct any bank charges you get from being overdrawn to your employer though as it's obviously not your fault so you shouldn't have to pay them.

god there seems to be some self-righteous people on here. Good for them if they earn enough to save loads of money for these situations - lots of people who've just started out in work can't afford to do this, the bills need to be paid and the wage covers them, but I couldn't afford to go 5 or 6 weeks without being paid.

Good luck OP x

This isn't 5 or 6 weeks, it's a few days.
If you live so close to your overdraft then you should think more about when you are spending your money.
It's not being on a high horse, it's common sense.

It could be. They said next monday at earlist. The reason there on about not going in tomorrow is they said it could be anything upto 29th -_- :(

Are you salaried or hourly paid?

Have you got a proper employment contract?

My wife is a Global Treasurer for a large company and she says that you are being taken for a ride. It is the easiest thing in the world to blame the Payroll dept, but if this is frequent then it implies a financial problem within the company and you should be looking to get another job asap.

I get a set salery PCM. I'm not 100% sure tbh. I know im actully permanant and not just there for a few months.

Just a small update 'jack' sent another e mail saying the manager of the payroll department has been fired lol So at least thats somthing.

If you are salaried, you should be able to go to the most senior person (financial controller preferably) you can find tomorrow and ask them to pay you 1/12 of your annual salary minus 33% for tax and national insurance by BACS, it will hit your account on Thursday, or you could tell them to do it by CHAPS and that will hit your account the same day (as in tomorrow) as long as it is sent by 3pm.

Take your bank details with you and get a receipt.

That is my wife's advice.

Oh yeah, she said, get another job before next month....

While it is unfortunate, I do know that my company had a similar issue, however as I work in accounts I know that it was related to a change in our system and pay was one day late. What amazed me was the number of staff we had go into overdrafts and have DDs miss. We paid them all without hesitation but I would always suggest leaving a bit of a buffer between when your DDs are due and when you get paid.

Finanacial Controller or Financial Director may not be willing to take requests outside of HR and Payroll channels.

but I couldn't afford to go 5 or 6 weeks without being paid.

Nor can I. But a months cash buffer doesn't take that long to build up and, evidently, is a luxury worth pursuing. Certainly beats watching Avatar on your new cinema setup before the bailiffs carry it out the door.

Mistakes can happen, I would be mortified if this happened at my work. I would either write checks which ppl could cash or pay everyone in cash. Infact I have gone round my staffs houses in the past to pay them.

Wife used to work in HR ( as a temp ) for Time computers. At the end of the month she said that they would miss paying about 25% of the staff and those that complained got paid out of petty cash. She said the stuff they did was just try and put off paying people because they didnt have the cash in the bank.

But it is their fault if you have budgeted based on the perfectly reasonable expectation of being paid when they said they'd pay you.

Which is what the vast majority of people do! It's 2010 and it is perfectly reasonable to assume you will get paid without fail on the day your contract stipulates!

In fact, I am actually quite shocked that it isn't illegal for companies to delay paying you.

Stories like these make me appreciate payroll staff at my workplace. In 20 years, there has only been one problem with paying me in full on time and they simply asked me how much I wanted in cash to handle the delay.
