Ok, so here goes.

Boot laptop normally, you get the Vista loading bar then a black screen (which flicks grey to black, like something loading, then stays black. No mouse, no response from keys, etc. You hear the Vista start up chimes but nothing works.

Boot with F8 and you can enter safe mode and the machine starts in safe mode as expected. The only event logs are to do with wireless lan so I've disabled wireless but still nothing when booting normally.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

you say you can get into safe mode, so sounds like a driver issue, particularly chipset or video, have a go at reinstalling video/chipset drivers in safe mode and post back how you get on

-Set the res in safemode to a 'safe' one
-If that fails, uninstall video driver in safemode

Ahh, good shout. I thought Vista was clever enough to revert. If I choose a safe resolution in Safe Mode, will that carry over when rebooted normally, I didn't think it did.

EDIT: Yeh, just tried this on a Vista machine and it only affects the resolution in safe mode. I'll uninstall the disaply adapter and let it boot back up normally.

I'll also check it's not being output to a secondary monitor. I might actually plug a secondary monitor in too at this rate!
