The pope. Popeing about.

It's not fair to call him a Nazi. The reality is simply that as a youth he wasn't willing to defy the Nazis by himself at the height of their power. All he did was join a youth group that he was required by law to join, nothing more than that. Just like every other German his age did. You expect a 14 year old in a country ruled by the Nazis to defy them over such a trivial thing?

It's UN recognition is pretty unimportant, what matters is if we recognise it, which as we have an ambassador to the Vatican I would assume we do. As such if it is a state visit then it is only normal for us to pick up security costs.

Except he is here doing religious things rather than state things, so I'm not sure why we have to pick up the bill for that

It is both. His first appointment is in fact meeting the head of state. Hence why the Catholic Church are picking up some of the costs and why the UK government is picking up some of the costs.

He has been invited as the Queens guest, and will meet her and all the leaders of the major political parties. It isn't uncommon for leaders to do other things than just meet the leaders.

I live a few mins up the road from the B'ham event, not looking forward to the chaos! I dare say I'll stay inside on the day.

The sooner catholicism dies out the better. Christianity is bad but catholicism is the worst of the nunch. The pope is a mentally ill moron with his stance to sex, condoms, gays, euthanasia and abortion. Not to mention the whole child abuse fiasco. :/

I tend to find Baptists and Evangelicals a bit more irritating to be honest. But then most of the Catholics I know are just people who rarely mention their faith so you would never know unless you asked or followed them on a Sunday...

So I gather that you're not planning to come and see him over here on his visit. I can give you a ticket if you want. :p

Well here I don't really mind them, in Poland though, it is ridiculous, it's holding the country back, people prefer to go to bloody church than work. Not to mention people marrying&getting kids extremely early because sex before marriage and using condoms is bad mkay... I hate the attitude to religion there, and the influence on politics from the church there, secularization isn't as far there as here. They are in some ways stuck back in the dark ages.

The attitude to sex and discrimination against gays is sickening there.

And the same can be said about most religions, oddly enough. Although maybe not a "church" in a lot of instances.

Yes but it is backwards imo, for example, in the NL: 34% believe in god, in the UK 38%. In Poland it's so bad that 80 % still believes :(.

Well it doesn't affect you in anyway so why should you care what people in Poland believe? If they want to be "backward" thats their choice.
