Hi I've been out the graphics card race for quite a while now and i could do with some advice.
Firstly i'm about to upgrade my monitor to a 23" model which will allow me to run a resolution of 1900x1080. Up to now i've been running 1680x1050 using a geforce gtx 260 rev 2.
This card has been brilliant for the past 18 months that i've had and runs everything at max. So i suppose my first question is will this card struggle a bit once i up the resolution? I mainly play battlefield, starcraft and soon f12010 :)

If the answer is no then great the card will last me a good bit longer, if the answer is yes then i've been reading about the new geforce 460 which is getting good right ups and seems like a good mid price card.
So my 2nd question is, is the 460 and decent upgrade over the 260?...........................or dare i say it, is an ATI the way to go?

As i said i've not been keeping up with the latest on graphics cards so any advice would be most welcome. Cheers guys.

Hi,

The 460 is the best bang for buck DX 11 card on the market right now. I would suggest you get one of the 1 gig models, more onboard graphics ram will equal bigger resolutions onscreen.

Some companies stick on lots of RAM on low pwered cards to make them look good, but in this case I would say 1 gig will be used because the 460 has a 256 bit memory bus, in conjunction with your 23 inch screen I would suggest a perfect match.

In regards to your other question. I found the 260 would struggle in some games, though for the brief time I owned it, it was a great card, now it is 2010 I say get the 460.

Note I have tw GTX 275's in SLI, but if I had just one I would upgrade tomorrow. I think 3D mark Vantage has a score of 15,000 with a 460, whilst one of my cards gets a measly 12,000 from memory, plus lots of games are starting to use DX 11 (Civilisation 5, WOW soon, Dirt 2, Battlefield:BC2 etc)

Cheers Von

You obviously think there's a big enough difference between the 260v2 and the 460 to make it a worthwhile purchase?

From what i've read so far as i'm looking for a new card soon

Your current card will start to struggle with the higher res defeating the object of upgrading your monitor, I too am gaming at 1680 and want to progress next year with a new GPU and monitor. But you could try it by getting a monitor first, no harm in doing that

I also think the 460 as a single GPU solution at that res isnt going to cope too well with applied eye candy, obviously it will be fine with everything off but start turning on the good stuff and I reckon itll struggle, as an SLI setup it'll be a different story

I'd spend a bit more for that res as a single GPU solution IF you want to turn the eye candy up

I had a 280GTX and game at the same res, i too play BFBC, your car will likely struggle a bit at higher res, if you pack on the detail

Personally i would skip the 460 and get a 470, this is not a slight on the 460 it is a good card, but a 460 only packs around 50% more processing cores than your 260, the 470 is not a lot more and has almost double the cores of your old card making it roughly twice as fast, it's imo the sweetspot in terms of being near the performance of the flagship 480 for near the price of the 460, i'm still gaming at that res and got the 470

Thanks Nyoron

It does indeed appear to be a decent upgrade, i particularly like the fact it's quieter, draws less power and produces less heat while being faster :)

I intend to get a new monitor next week all being well and i will indeed wait and see how it performs, looking at the prices i can get the Custom PC recommended gainward model for around £180 which seems not too bad.
I suppose the advantage in upgrading sooner rather than later is I'll get more for my 260 on ebay :)

Yes, I think the purchase would be worthwhile, 260 2 years old, 460 card 2 months old and DX 11, which a lot of people have not mentioned here.

However to play Devils advocate the 6000 series from ATI coming in two months time. ATI ave been very very competitive and well priced over the last two years. Depends how desperate you want a new card.

The 470 from reading reviews is a fast card, but draws lots of power and apparently gets noisy/hot, but not as much as its bigger brother, it also costs 40 pounds more. On a side note I think it will go EOL soon, because the price has dropped like a bomb, plus Nvidia have been giving free games with the 470-perhaps the GTX 475 is due soon?

Cheers

There's never a good time to buy any pc component but as advised earlier i'll get the monitor......once i decide which one and then see how things go from there.

The GTX260 will have not problem for SC2 even at 1920x1200 Ultra Quality, not too sure about the other two games though.

I think you should just upgrade monitor first and see how your GTX260 couping...if it struggle, then upgrade the graphic card. It only take 2-3 days between placing the order and the new card reaching your door anyway...don't think you can't survive using GTX260 on 1080p for just a few days :p
