I've been searching for something to control my music player (in another thread) and found some usful info.

Now I'm looking for something that will control everything (music/films etc). I guess something like an iPad would be perfect but I'm looking for a cheap alternative.

Also, I'm interested in touch screen tft's so I could stick on on a wall to control stuff too.

Any info would be great :)

Run xbmc on your pc for music and films then control with either a iphone / ipod touch / ipad or an android phone with the xmbc app. Its brilliant, connects wirelessly to act as a remote, but also has a file viewer that lets you browse your libary

Great. Thanks for posting guys :)

Is XBMC quite straightforward to setup/configure?

It's not as hard as it was when I tried it over a year ago, literally as we speak sorting out my HTPC with the XBMC beta from the website.

It's got an updated UI and really clean looking. Setup is rather straight forward but you might get a bit confused with it swapping between to 'library mode' every time you go into video's after going to tv series, just have to use movies instead.

The difference being 'Videos' displays it as file structure where as, 'Movies' bashes all the films including subfolders into one list but then I couldn't tell the HD ones apart so I've had to rename all the HD ones. But on the other hand 'Videos' doesn't allow you to display movie information.

confusing but setup is reasonably easy.

Doesn't sound too bad :)

I'll give it a go at the weekend once I've got my living room back in order (redecorating for the last 3 weeks!)

XBMC plus Aeon65 Skin is brilliant once fully setup.
Read as much as you can on the xbmc wiki and forums, including the aeon sub forums.
I intend it to be the show piece of my room once i get it all setup exactly how I want it and buy some new kit!

I'll pop over there for a look :)

Once I have it all integrated it should be exactly what I'm after.

Depending on what skin you use the quality of the move is displayed under the poster. That way you can use library mode for everything.

I use Alaska skin.

Do the movie covers auto update or do you have to download and attach then manually?

Auto update from a scraper.I'm using xbmc live in my htpc, with my desire as a remote and it's a brilliant setup, very easy to setup.using the aeon skin too :) it also downloads movie posters and plot synopsis info for you.

just trying to figure out how to get it to stream trailers now. Any ideas?

Not sure tom, but like I said above had a look on the xbmc wiki and forums, so much good information. Including getting the correct posters for tv series to look good on the Aeon skin :)

Have a look at my media centre thread. It's for a Mac, but it uses the Mac equivalent of XBMC, and I have the Aeon skin running on it.

Might be of use to see it all up and running if you don't want to trawl the interwebs.

What does XBMC offer over mediaportal?

XBMC crashes all the time and does not work as well as media portal, I have recently switched to media portal and find it much better, media portal is based on an early version of xbmc i believe, also I think media portal uses the systems codecs where as xbmc has all its own ones.

I found XBMC struggled with a few of my movies (probly summut to do with the above) gone back to VMC with Media Browser!.. is there a Media Center Remote App available, or shall I just get a Logitec remote for mine???

Never had xbmc crash on me yet, though I havent used it THAT much yet. It is my intention to use it exclusively for media in the coming months.

used xbmc early on in its pc days and had a couple issues with it so moved to mp, was going to try moving back to xbmc as it got a lot of respect form me back on the xbox but ive decided to hold off for the ever elusive media portal 2.0
