so I'm here, in SFF, it's taken a while but I've got away from the flashy giganto cases and I'm ready for something a little more refined, modern and space saving. 2 years ago I had a thermaltake armour LCS (piece of crap) currently i am in a lian li A05B (a very nice case but still too big) and I'm ready to downsize again, look what's just come through the door;

a lian li pc v351r and a gigabyte G41M ES2L.

I initially wanted the pc08 for a case after having completed a build in it's smaller sibling the pc07 but I couldn't find a single retailer in the UK stocking the black version and I'll be buggered if I spend more than £100 (red version) on a case again (screw you thermaltake!), and then I found the red v351 on offer on ocuk, a quick google for reviews and pictures made me want it and a quick check of the account balance revealed I could have it (and have it I did!)

so i'll open it up

DSC_0595.jpg

standard lian li fare, plastic sheet protecting the case from scratches and two blocks of polystyrene preventing any real damage to the case

DSC_0596.jpg

a helpful sheet of lian li accessories (most of which are either a; incompatible with this case, or b; like hens teeth in the UK) and the instructions (which i carefully threw aside like any real man should).

the case from a couple of angles.

and the inside, I've carefully removed the HDD tray, it'll allow more airflow to the rear exhaust and will allow for more modding. In all seriousness though, rivets lian li? can't you just make them modular?

the colour is interesting, it's not man red (you know, Ferraris, big red buttons etc) but at least it's not proper gay hot pink red, it'll do i suppose, at least it's a nice finish (of course it is, it's lian li).

that's it for now, the spec will be my existing kit which is as follows;

intel core 2 duo E5200
2x2GB OCZ gold edition 800mhz
XFX ATI Radeon HD 4830 512MB
some 160gb SATA second hand hard drive
cheap SATA LG dvd drive
corsair HX520

this is currently in here:

that's it, nothing fancy, I've really only been using my PC as a media centre for the last year or so, I have a 360 for games and my current hardware can more than adequately handle the few PC game I like to play.

so questions to OcUK;

my CPU is currently cooled by a thermalright ultra120 (which i know is overkill), the layout of the v351 means it's not going to fit without making a custom backplate and swapping the PSU and exhaust fan mounts over, is this really something i want to burden myself with or should i just buy a scythe shuriken big (or other top down cooler), or even just use the intel stock cooler?

i'm also considering a few small upgrades, i need a new hard drive, it doesn't need to be big, about the size i have now, but it needs to be quiet and have good performance, i'm also thinking of launching myself in to the present and buying a blu ray drive, which does the OcUK community recommend? Are there any other upgrades you lot would recommend?

i'd like to make another order tomorrow (payday, yippee!) so let me know

I had a V350 and I went with the Scythe Mini Shuriken. Silent, and a great performer.

Obviously you'll need a new motherboard, but beyond that, you can buy as if it was a full ATX. A nice couple of terabytes of Spinpoint goodness, and you're good to go.

As for Bluray, there's not a lot to compare, so generally the cheapest drive is worth it. Good luck stealthing the drive itself, ey. ;)

thanks, good to know

i have a mobo, see first piccy ;)

cool, thanks again, i probably wont even bother trying to stealth it at all :p

just ordered the following

LiteOn iHOS104-37 4x BD-ROM Drive
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
Scythe Shuriken BIG Quiet Low Profile CPU Cooler

for less than £100, thanks ocuk ;). should be here monday.

you asked for pics, well i have them, I got my 2nd order from ocuk last night and set about the transferal, took about 2 hours from taking the first side panel off my old case to a completed OS install, just look how many screws I had to undo before I could even begin

/sigh

right, here's what I got last night
DSC_0600.jpg

scythe shuriken BIG, 500gb seagate barracuda and a liteon 4x BD Rom drive

and all the components together;

(forgot to include the RAM, oops!)

just comparing the old CPU cooler with the new;
DSC_0603.jpg

very low profile but the overall surface area is very similar;
DSC_0602.jpg

the scythe fan is as close to silent as I can describe by the way.

moving on we have the motherboard, RAM, CPU and cooler all mounted in the motherboard tray, looking good so far;

I chose to install the GPU last in the build as it gave me full access to the motherboard while working inside the case with short cables.

and the finished pics of the inside
from the GPU

and the CPU

cable management is good enough as far as I am concerned, there is a nice amount of clear space over the motherboard for cool airflow from the front and all cables possible to hide have been hidden.

no pics of the outside yet, that'll come tomorrow when i've tidied off my desk.

So, what does OcUK think? One curious thing is that my score in the 'windows experience index' is lower, it used to be 5.2 with my hard drive transfer rate being the limiting factor, my CPU and RAM next at 5.7, now my hard drive is 5.9 but my CPU sits at 4.7 and my RAM at 5.0, what's up with that?! oh well, it works fine, that's the main point.

looks great i have a V350 in black, built it a couple of years back now. I had thought of overclocking but was advised not too because of temps. I used a scythe mini ninja i think it was called. Just wondering what scythes latest cpu cooler is like in comparison.

Will probably keep the case for a while and just upgrade in the future so good to no for when i get a faster cpu

i haven't overclocked in years, i don't see the point any more, my current CPU works just fine and if I want it to work better i'd just buy a second hand quad core or something. Check out some reviews online for the scythe shuriken big though, it come out quite favourably on CPUs much more powerful than mine!

that's my plan, I dont intend to change the case now at all, it fits in the gap I have for it perfectly, it looks classy and understated and it's not obtrusive, I dare say I will be carrying out a few more updates in the near future :p. though.

Yea they do look great. I like the red too. I will check out the reviews, thanks. Just hopefully the new GPU's that keep coming out dont get much bigger. As i remember there were certain GPU's out at the time that just simply wouldnt fit.

yes, it could be a squeeze with some of the bigger ones, fortunately there is a bit of give in that you can remove the fan and add about an extra 3/4" which can make all the difference. it depends what you use your PC for though, my GPU is massive overkill, i'm considering downgrading to cut down on noise.
