Black tie events

Have you actually got a biodag? Hardly ever hear of them let alone see them. What's the difference?

My friend, Cam, has one. It was a 21st from a few of his mates. It's chuffing huge. Totally pointless mind, but he plays in a pipe band and the drum major is allowed to wear them though I don't think he has ever worn his out either in a band role or just a normal event when he's in his kilt. His has multiple smaller knives in it which is quite cool. Don't have a picture unfortunately. They are cool but because of their size I imagine they'd get in the way if you were sitting down. Would look good walking about in it though.

I'm attending a black tie do in November in Perthshire and my wife wants me to go in a kilt. My father-in-law could probably lend me his family tartan, however am I likely to get a skean dhu in the ribs, or a kick in the sporran for being an Englishman in Scots attire?

As said it'll be fine, just watch out for middle-aged hen parties marauding through as they have no shame and you'll soon have no modesty if they get their way.

I should be wearing my kilt this weekend for a wedding reception, looking forward to it already.

I've never had any bother, although one of my friends did ask me not to wear my kilt to her wedding as apparently some of her family might have kicked up a fuss.

If you're nominated for an award go in a propper dinner jacket. If you 100% don't feel comfortable in one, then you could go for a waistcoat+trousers/3 piece suit.-But only wear the waistcoat, and try and make it work with a bow-tie... you'l look sharp, but if everyone is in dinner jackets, you will still risk looking like a tit.. also it can be difficult finding a waistcoat that doesn't look like you're going to a wedding-- it can work very well though, i wore a 3 piece to my prom and was constantly complimented on how good i looked, after all its how well the clothes fit you... you could still look a tit in a dinner jacket, simply because it didnt fit you right... frankly i love wearing a suit, im a student so i don't often get the chance but love dressing smart.

Out of interest what made you decide to get a Kilt? Asking this as I noticed in the nationality thread that you aren't of Scottish decent.

My name is of Scottish descent, and my grandfather has Scottish roots. Did I write English in the other thread? Best go edit that. A lot of Scots were shifted to Australia a while back, so there's a lot of Scottish names and the like in certain parts of Australia.

Ah right I wondered if you just happened to like the idea of owning a kilt or, as is the case, you had some Scottish roots. The more the merrier anyway.

It's a dinner suit not a tuxedo because you are in the UK and not the USA.

^^^ this

or dinner jacket

tuxedo is so named because some yank wore a dinner jacket at the tuxedo club in NY back in the day and then a bunch of the other members copied him so a dinner jacket is called a tuxedo in America.

From experience of 'Black tie' events, simply get some smart shoes, black suit trousers, a plain white or black shirt and a black tie.. can pick most of this from primark and it wont cost you much + perhaps a waistcoat type affair upto you though.

However if you are willing to spend a bit look for full suits.

Don't wear a black tie to a black tie event, unless you want to look like you're at a funeral.
