Does out of date pasport still work as proof of age/ID ?

Yes of course it will.

I wasn't allowed to start my last job until I showed them a copy of my passport, even though I was working there as a temp at the time  and I had recently changed my surname so the passport was invalid and had my previous surname on yet they still accepted it....

I wouldn't be so sure, for security clearance as an example it wouldn't work - my passport had only expired in the past year or so but I couldn't use it as a proof of identity - there was no question of the previous validity of the passport but as soon as it hit the expiry date it's no longer technically proof of age or identity. Instead my birth certificate was requested - I did have a debate about whether this was in fact a complete waste of time since it doesn't have photo ID (for obvious reasons) and is an even older document so less use in checking but because it is still valid ID the process could proceed.

So as said it's not technically valid although many places will allow it anyway. Only way to know is to try it and see whether you get in or not but with a picture that's probably 7+ years old now there's a fair chance you've changed in appearance.

How old are you in the picture, if its a 5-10year passport that expired 2 years ago you could be 8-12 in the picture, no way any doorman with sense would accept a picture of a 12year old in a passport as being you.

Security clearance is slightly different to getting into a club! These days security clearance is such a ridiculous tick box exercise it's becoming a joke there is no common sense in the system and the whole process seems geared around creating jobs.

Back to the OP if the bouncer is sensible and the picture is a reasonable likness then it should be no problem but the words sensible and bouncer very rarely meet.

I know it's a rather different thing but the principle that an out of date passport should still have been sufficient for the purposes of identification and wasn't is all I was trying to put across. It will vary according to what you are doing how stringent they are but technically a bouncer would be within their rights to refuse.

I have used an out of date passport many a time and actually had it rejected by bouncers. I guess the older ones are easier to forge? ;)

Luckily I had my drivers license with me just in case.

When I turned eighteen I used my passport with a picture of me from when I was thirteen!

Got in everywhere without comment, except for one time when they handed it round laughing saying it was Harry Potter...

My passport ran out in April of this year and i realised the other day i have no valid form of ID in the house, i cant afford to renew just yet and my provisional is the old paper one... which has probably expired aswell, so basically i cant do anything official atm

My mate got refused when it was a month out (he's 20) a few days ago.

Try and a provisional, smaller and cheaper to replace :p .

Of course it works as proof of age or ID.

Whether it works as valid proof of age or ID is another matter ;)
Renew it.

I've had quite a few friends say that they've been refused entry to clubs/bars etc with an out-of-date passport. Technically the bouncers are correct as it's expired and therefore not valid.

But lets not allow the technicalities to get in the way of a good bouncer bashing thread :p
