Currently have onboard sound and 5 year old CReative inspire 6.1 6700 surround sound.

The 6.1 has always been a pain to get working on 7.1 onboard..so I am considering upgrading to a new sound card..been looking at the creative titanium pro and debating if it worth replacing the surround sound..
Any suggestions on valid replacements or should I keep hold of the 6.1's to see if they work with a new sound card?

(I do game / watch movies etc )... do not have an identified budget at the mo..but nothing stupidly priced ( expecting 100 for sound card and maybe 200 for speakers )..

You are going to have a problem I'm afraid, connecting those speakers, due to the way Creative share the channels amongst the 3.5mm jacks. 5.1 is fine, as it's standard to any 5.1 on sound device or speakers. The 6700's 6.1 connection is unique to Creative though, and uses 3 channels on one 3.5mm jack. 7.1 has 2 channels per jack, so you will lose a channel.

Best bet is to get new speakers.

Had a look at the new Asus Xonar DG?
Its <£30 so would leave a bit more for your speaker setup :)

Cheers for reply

I looked just before at the DS (7.1) and how does this compare to the titanium pro..38 quid compared with 109-130 ...is the creative worth the money (against the ds/dg) if I am going to replace the speakers

Marsman,

I feared as much ...any suggestions?

Is it worth replacing the realtek 7.1 with a dedicated sound card then?

Regards

IMO, it is worth getting a sound card. A lot of people feel the audio quality gain is worth it, however, there are some, who find it hard to distinguish a difference, or can't justify the cost of a sound card for what gain there is. Personal preference I guess.

The Xonar D2X is a very good card. Just going back to one of your earlier questions. I don't think the Titanium Fatality Pro is worth it at all. The Titanium is a much better buy, as it's the same card without the cover and fancy Fatality name. The Fatality Pro does have XRAM, but many find this doesn't do much to the performance with modern CPU's being so fast. At nearly £40 more than the Titanium, it certainly is too expensive IMO.

As for the speakers, well I am guessing you are looking for 5.1, unless you can find a set of Creative T7900 7.1 speakers somewhere, I don't think there are any other 7.1 sets currently available. I think if you are going to buy Logitech X540's, or Creative T6160's, it may be better to get a cheaper sound card. Quite a few people pair the D2/D2X with Logitech's Z5500 speakers. The X540's I am sure are good for what they are, but I doubt they warrant a £90 sound card. Xonar D1/DX or X-Fi Xtreme Gamer would suffice.
