Book reveals The Stig's identity. Top Gear not happy.

They really should do more challenges that involve the TOCA drivers - they are mental :)

Only Clarkson time has been recorded using the original car I believe (1:50)

over-night caravan racing? airport services racing? you mean those ones?

the ones with the "no contact" rule...

when i first saw the caravan one, i was in tears :p

That German lass would be an interesting Stig replacement!

hmmm, im not to sure. im not saying shes crap - far from it she probly has more car controll than nearly every single one of us. but as a stig replacment, i just dont think she is as skilled.

they would have to scrap the lap times.

thats why there was only one "stig" for the actual laps, and about 7 other stand in's for when they do challenges etc.

but anyway, they will get a new stig (or similar gimick)

Erm how do you explain all the lap times that Black Stig (Perry Mcarthy) that still sit on the board?

I hope they do away with the whole Stig thing and update the format so that it feels fresh again. Top Gear has become very stale. And get rid of Hammond and bring in someone with a bit of character.

Hammond is Clarkson's female dog. You can see it more in the early episodes when he has to let Clarkson take the peepee out of him. Painful.

Something that I have wondered about is, would all of this nonsense have been avoided if Ben Collins wrote the biog as 'The Stig' instead of 'Ben Collins'? I.e. The Stig's POV so no names were dropped!?

The BBC would have been happy as no contract would have been broken, Mr Collins would have been happy and gained more money....win win! though I guess the other side of this argument is that it may have given a bit more of an identity to The Stig than the BBC would have liked if you were able to read about his thoughts/experiences etc Part of the joke is that he is mysterious and does seemingly random and strange things.

Mind you, I have seen interviews with The Stig by the other 3 presenters in Top Gear books before so not sure how this would have been any different?

Now the gloves are off, Collins could print some revealing things about TG in the book. Might actually be worth a read!

The Stig (white racing suit + helmet) is probably a trademark registered to the TG production company...So writing it as "The Stig" without a contract agreement with the creators of TG would have probably been even worse (copyright or trademark vs employment contract).

The difference would be, that in the official TG books any interviews would be sanctioned, and the content approved by the people that own the rights and trademarks - Ben Collins has no rights or trademarks associated with the Stig as a character, not even the image rights that would normally belong to any actor as his likeness is never used (it's a white suit, no face, not even visible skin, so no image rights).
About the only thing he can speak about are his experiences as the person playing the part, not as the Stig character (and even then he's on dodgy ground, he's won the case to get the book published, but that still leaves the BBC/TG with breach of contract and the like as potential avenues - they've already invoked his contract to sack him by the sounds of it).

Jeremy Clarkson may have said he was 'history,' but just weeks after being sacked by the BBC, another channel has snapped up The Stig.

Ben Collins, who wore the helmet and white suit for seven years, is racing over to Channel Five's rival motoring show Fifth Gear.

The professional driver will perform similar roles to those he did for Top Gear, including extreme racing challenges, from next week.

But unlike his 'mystery man' status at the BBC, Collins will also try his hand at some presenting, alongside hosts Tiff Needell, Vicki Butler-Henderson, Jason Plato and Jonny Smith.
