I have no interest in the event and I don't think that we are, as a country, able to put on these events well. I also don't think that we are really in a position to afford putting it on properly.

Maybe we should scale it back to a school sports day type affair.
 
I think it's great even though I will probably not go to see any of the events as I don't have the money for this sort of activities.

At least something BIG is happening in London. Great way of showing the world how great London is (insert sarcasm here).

You do realise a lot of events aren't being held in London, such as the sailing etc.
 
I'm pancake personally.

One thing is for sure I will be avoiding London like the plague whilst it's on. The tube is bad enough when it gets busy during rush hour/after big events so nuts to the Olympics tbh.
 
I think the Paralympic Games should be shown first.

£9.345 billion is going to be the final cost of it(they hope) :eek:

Oh and some Muslim countries have complained that the 2012 Olympic Games will take place during the month of Ramadan,
which in 2012 occurs from 20 July so it's not very nice for them.

Manchester bid (twice?) for the Olympic Games and lost before London won it. I'm sure that there's plenty of cities in the UK that could successfully host the Olympics but only London was capable of winning it.

Personally, I'm happy for the Olympics. They've opened up a new platform onto the Central Line at Stratford, saving me a good 20 seconds on my daily commute. :p
 
I live around ten minutes away from the Olympic Site so I'm looking forward to all of the benefits coming to my borough such as the largest shopping centre in Europe and more :)

Because the tax payer pays for it all, the people that run it, bid for it get paid from the tax payer, thats why.

Hmm think what that could have bought this country, seriously why are we spending so much when the country is falling to piece money wise.

Problem is China had it last and they went all out OTT and everyone will look at the games and compare it to 2008

It's not the people of those countries that want to hold them, rather the governments and politicians.

With a price tag of £9.3 billion (budget) you would think this country could find a lot better things to spend it on?

Even if we accept your premise then it doesn't follow logically that would be a good reason to do it. If the people who determine whether to go for the sporting event or not are paid by the tax payer then if the tax payer (as an amorphous entity) don't want the event it's not a good idea for the people in charge to bid for it - annoying the people who pay your wages tends to be a fast route into problems and ultimately unemployment.
 
The Beijing Olympics still made a profit (although a very small one), so I expect we will benefit as well but there are other non-monetary benefits for the country too.

Same here, I live just down the road from the olympic village, I must say they have been good with keeping local residents informed of progress and what is being done to ensure regeneration of the area. I regularly get newsletter updates and invitations to meetings / previews of the olympic site coming through my door.

Still haven't decided whether or not to stay in my house during the olympics or rent it out, we've had one offer to rent it for the duration of the olympics already.
