This is going to be my first English Winter

Last winter was extremely cold. So cold I had to buy this jacket!

I still needed a scarf, too.

In Plymouth? You didn't even get any snow!:p

I can vouch for this. -9 was registered in West Ken last winter.

At night, 3am, that doesn't count. I'm sure -14 used to be quite common only a few years ago (I'm only 24) in the south east.:p

But yeah, Coat and Jumper is pretty much all you need, and a pair of gloves. Get something like a thin Berghaus or North Face rain jacket and a 200-400wt fleece (from an outdoor shop), will sort you for the entire winter.:)

lulz at pants being underpants (I wear trousers as well to work, fyi). Next you'll be telling me I can't use my hands in football...

Depends, if you play womens sports then yeah, play a proper sport and you can use your hands as much as you want.:p

Yeap as said - it's far worse due to all the moaning.

You're in London as well, it's not really going to be that bad. :p
Pretty much sums it up. It only gets really cold for a short time anyway, the rest of the time you'll be inside and won't notice. I reckon a warm coat to get you through your commute and you'll be a good'un.

I read that last years amount of snow only occurs every 100 years, I only read that recently, probably on Yahoo news :p

Really hoping for a mild winter, dont mind it cold as long as its not cold and raining all the time and I HATE snow

OP it does get very cold but as said you're in London which isnt as bad as other parts of the country, get a decent water proof warm coat and thats it really. Personally I use two Berghaus jackets, I have a fleece and a over jacket thats waterproof and light. Put them both together and epic warms are acheived

The snow last winter was great, the local council was totally unprepared for it, lots of main roads around my area remained untreated and bacame ice rinks, half the staff at work didn't turn up, we couldn't get within 2 miles of where my girlfriend keeps the horses without borrowing her dads Land Rover (which was amazing in the snow).

Was great fun, not seen snow like that for years. :D

To be brutally honest you're worrying over nothing.
You're in a position where you can buy these things on an "as needed" basis, if you find you can't handle it, buy the appropriate clothing, it's not like you're in the middle of nowhere.
Otherwise save the money and wait and see.

We did get snow! :D Admittedly, it was only an inch deep at most but it was still ruddy cold

Do you live on the outskirts or in the centre?

I remember 2008 when there was no snow IN Plymouth but the A38 had a foot of snow and people had to be rescued. Most dissapointing and disheartening seeing cars coming in with inches of snow on them. :(

Dartmoor was good though, 5ft snowdrifts (at the bottom of some of the tors) and loads of snow away from the roads.:D

Agreed, there is no such thing as bad weather in the UK, just the wrong type of clothing.

So I moved here from Australia in July and am not sure what to expect from the winter here. This can also be a spec me a winter clothing thread as well, what sorts of clothing will I want for the winter and where should I go to look from them? I'm not uber poor but wanting to keep most of my monies for travelling so don't rule out primark! :D

I have a hoodie, but I don't think this will be enough will it? Also my main concern is a decent wet-weather jacket to wear with my work gear to and from work.

Hoard as much food as possible. As soon as the first snow falls you'll be trapped in your house. It won't be because the snow is deep, just everything will be closed.

get some decent shoes/trainers/outdoor footwear too. snow and ice on pavements will probably be an issue, especially this year when the councils are trying to save some cash :p
also, get a stack of video games or movies to watch as the TV is proper poor! :D
