This is going to be my first English Winter

get some decent shoes/trainers/outdoor footwear too. snow and ice on pavements will probably be an issue, especially this year when the councils are trying to save some cash :p
also, get a stack of video games or movies to watch as the TV is proper poor! :D

Good! No salt means less ice!

It's only when stupid councils/people grit paths once or twice that you get the sheets of ice we had in some places last year.

Its rare you'll need more than a hoodie for the cold, something waterproof for the rain. Its really not that cold that often, its pretty rarely below freezing so why anyone would need several layers and scarfs is beyond me.

last year in london was pretty bad lol

I work with a lady who rides a motorbike to work sometimes, and we were discussing last winter's snow the other day. She said she would never, ever take her bike out in the snow as you just don't have enough grip. She said a trail bike with big grippy tyres might just about manage it, but that a regular road bike is just an accident waiting to happen.

You should be more concerned about draught proofing your house and buying old curtains for any external doors. Not forgetting extra heavy curtains for the windows, more-so if you have single glazing!

Do you live on the outskirts or in the centre?

I remember 2008 when there was no snow IN Plymouth but the A38 had a foot of snow and people had to be rescued. Most dissapointing and disheartening seeing cars coming in with inches of snow on them. :(

In the centre. It's true that most of the time we get no snow whatsoever but last year was(hopefully) a one off. Usually when it snows here it will melt within a couple of minutes of hitting the ground but it settled for weeks last year. It was a hellish experience that I'm not used to and never want it to happen again!

Don't know where you are but it's been like that for two months. :p

Well I went away for a month or so in mid July.:p

Weeks? Not according to my uni friends that were still there.:p

English winters are very unpredictable tbh... (In the south) generally you have about 20 weeks of 5-7C damp drizzly days, with the odd week of heavy rain - so basically reasonably water resistant jacket and long trousers. Maybe the odd 5-10 days of light snow - at which point half the country panics. May also get a week or 2 of low temperatures resulting in ground ice so:

Average jacket.
Long trousers.
Footwear with decent grip.

I've done most of the recent winters here with just a t-shirt under my shirt so its not that cold mostly - maybe the odd 2-3 days here and there where I've put a jumper on. It would probably be handy to have some gloves but I doubt you will need them unless you feel the cold more than usual being used to Australia.

Very rarely we have freak winters with 6 inches of snow and extreme cold for over a month, not really seen much of that in the last 10 years tho. The North of the country will be similiar but colder.

lol at people complaining about last winter being EXTREMELY cold :DDD t shirt and a jacket all i needed.. :/ haven't seen a proper cold winter i bet ;)

Pfft, you are all weak. Last year it was -20 on average where I'm from :p

I'd think you could get away with just a jacket and gloves/scarf here. Especially in London where you probably would go in and out of the tube anyway.

Uhm I have like a 10 min walk to the tube station, can eb a 1 min walk to the bus stop, and then like a 2 min walk from chancery lane to my work.

Work gear is shirt, tie and pants. Although no tie atm.

My office is on Fetter Lane! Have you been to Chilangos on Fleet Street for lunch?

Back on topic though, make sure you get gloves, hat and maybe a scarf along with a thick jacket. It does get that cold.

We had a lot more than 1cm last winter! , we totaled over 20cm... some places in kent had more than that in one day lol

if last year's winter is anything to go by, stay inside at all costs! we had snow and really bad ice for around 1 month constantly, the entire country stopped! reached -16 where i am in hereford.

And this year it'll be mild and wet as per normal UK winters.

One place in Devon had 2 feet of snow, and were still inacessable by road for 2 weeks after it had thawed in most places.
