Internet Explorer 9 Beta 15.09.2010

Also appears to be no way to revert back to IE8 other than to use a system restore point...

I'm on Windows 7 and I managed to uninstall it through: Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features -> Installed updates. Somewhere in there it has Internet Explorer 9 Beta and from there you can uninstall it.

The favourites on the taskbar are great. I don't like having search on the left it’s not the place for it. Apart from that it looks good.

Nope, it wasn't, I looked.

OK first impressions so far...

Good:

  • Fast
  • I like the new minimal UI
  • Tearing off tabs is nice
  • All the web standards stuff - finally
  • Fast
Bad:

  • The UI was a bit too minimal and the first thing I did was restore the favourites bar
  • I don't like the combined URL/search box behaviour at all, to the point I've made myself a Google favourites button. That's backwards.
  • Buggy cursor behaviour. For example in this very box I can press the down arrow to jump to the line below - pressing the up arrow doesn't work the other way. In the next tab it's working fine.
Overall, quite positive, although if it starts bugging me further IE8 is going back on.

Also, did anyone else get redirected to a site you did not expect after sticking "beauty of the web" in the URL/search bar? I can't work out whether it was a search mis-hit or a DNS burp. It only did it twice and then the proper Microsoft site appeared again. If I look in my history all the visited URLs check out. Strange.

Notice that little red tab top left in Opera that has all the menus? Remind you of anything? Office 2010 maybe? :D

Well played sir, but the Office suite isn't a web browser, and the button in Office is there because it's better to have all your drop down menus in one button. The Ribbon still takes up loads of vertical space, which is what Opera's devs were trying to minimise use of by removing the tool bar.

I'm really liking IE9. It's a very good improvement, although some more improvements could be made, but it is only beta. It looks great so far.

Also how cool is it you can drop favourite sites onto the taskbar. Also if you right click you have new tweet/dms/news posts etc
We need a customised OcUK tasks menu :D Like this:

Is it just me or does the text on some websites look slightly blurry?
Yes, some of the fonts are rendered differently.

Loving it. Feels like a finished product almost.

Only thing is the Download Manager doesn't show the download speed anywhere  Slight oversight!!!

Downloading it now.

Can it run along side IE8?
No, it overwrites IE8.

Yeah, that's true. They implemented the download manager way back in Windows Longhorn's Internet Explorer, and that didn't display the download speed either.
