Dyslexia or just dumb?

I'm not having a go at you or your son! (you seem to have taken this very personally ). I am sure your son genuinely has learning difficulties but there are A LOT of liberties taken with the system.

I've seen the system at work in my son's primary school. There are a small group of about 6 or 7 amongst a school year of 50 or so (they have to be split across 3 classes) and dont see any kind of massive wastage.

Granted this is only at primary school, but is it not more likely he got classified as disabled and started receiving DLA ?

DLA usually gets backdated for a period prior to diagnosis which would easily pay for a laptop.

Basically if your more intelligent then the rest of the sheep flock or ask too many questions then your have a hard time to prove your "normal" in society.

I dont understand lysdexia, I never try to spell words via some mathematical equation or system, I have memorised every single one of them.
What's dsylexics problem, can't they remember things.
And before people say they can't remember things they cant see, why do words go in the wrong order, but shapes or objects in the world don't. (why isn't the world all topsey turvey)

There is a study (by a single women mindso not really evidence,) that says its all BS and its stupidity and lack of teaching that causes it.

Questionable research conducted in the dole queue by your mum doesn't count.:p

It's long been "fashionable" for geeks to think they are autistic, or have Asperger's, because they believe it signifies increased scientific or mathematical ability, Rain Man stylee.

Slashdot is a nightmare for it.

There's a test called the AQ test which can be used to diagnose autism and the like, insofar as those with high scores are typically autistic. It's more correlation than anything else, but it's pretty good from what I understand of it. Anyway. 80% of autistics score 32 or above on the test. I scored 34. Now, am I genuinely autistic (somewhere on the spectrum) or do I just game my answers in the right direction to appear that way, because as a geek I too "aspire" to be autistic?

You do know the bloke who devised that test is Borat's relative!

Yes of course you could game the test that is why that test is not used in isolation. People who would aspire to having Asperger's Syndrome are quite clearly bonkers. Yes you do get high-functioning Autism but it is quite rare. Autism itself does not lend itself to any particular brilliance bar the ability to not socially construe a great number of things. It is a spectrum disorder and like dyslexia has no definate causation although we are getting closer to highlighting the causative areas in the brain etc Castellanos or something like that from memory published some research a few years back. Many "geeks" will have Asperger's we just understand why people now have difficulty with social interactions in the same way we now know not everyone dies from consumption.

Oh there was a kid at school who got picked on because people thought he was really thick. One day he had enough and he wrote on the black board in huge letters, I'm not thick i'm dyslexic of course he spelt dyslexic wrong to the ammusment of some.

True story.

I reckon a lot of people are just lazy and are looking for a non confrontational excuse for their bad English.

To be fair, schools don't really mind this, and neither do pupils. I mean you get extra time for your exams lol?!

only if your diagnosied while still at school.

what a very stupid ignorant post.

"Oh yes of course, the majority of people just make it up" Nobody really has learning disabilities do they

Erm lol? I'll just highlight my post to help you learn reading comprehension, luckily you fall into one of the groups i genuinely believe has a problem with words.

I think the majority of people are just lazy and/or apathetic about literacy and pull the 'Dyslexia card' to get away with it.

I'm sure some people have a genuine word recognition problem though, but I think the actual figure for those people is probably much lower than is thought.

Yeah I'm fairly certain I said it exists as a real issue.
