This is going to be my first English Winter

Last winter was our coldest for 31 years, Londons coldest temperature last winter was -1.2C whilst further north parts of Wales hit -14.5C and Manchester hit -16.4C.

The car was reading -15C one morning in Berkshire..

Something for the cold, something for the rain that can also keep out cold wind. Simple things like beanies, scarves, gloves etc with a long coat if you're waiting at a station or something.

What do you work as? i.e do you need a smart winter jacket for work?

If not I would get a decent waterproof from something like a mountaineering brand e.g Berghaus, North face etc. They will be generally better quality, will dry quicker and will have sealed linings etc

It really does not get that cold in England, You should be able to layer up fine when it does. However there is plenty of rain.

I see you live in London, so I presume you are pretty close to public transport. That being the case your unlikely to have to spend too much time braving the elements.

I suspect it will be worse this year, summer has been **** poor and all the hot weather happened in april/may. It's already getting nippy. I'd rather do without snow though tbh.

Last winter was unusually cold and even then it was probably considered normal for many other civilised places. All you need are the following:

Jumpers/Hoodies
Jacket or Coat (jacket + hoody = lovely)
Hat
Scarf
Gloves

Pop into an outdoors shop and buy what you need when you need it. If you find you're still too cold, buy some thermals to act as a base-layer.

Last year, I was constantly walking all around to different parts of the company in the area and got very cold at times, so I bought an Berghaus RG1 Insulated jacket. The coat even kept me fantastically comfortable on New Year's Day in London when it was very cold indeed with added wind-chill. The only part of me that was cold were my cheeks (nothing I could do about that) and my thighs as I wasn't wearing any thermals under my jeans.

By and large, a light jacket and a hoody underneath, a beanie and some gloves will see you through winter comfortably enough.

Last Winter was quite bad, temperatures reached as little as -20 to -30 in southern Finland. North Finland was maybe a little more than -40 degrees. Lots of snow too! :D

Day or night?

Always find it funny that (usually) people in other countries quote daytime temperatures when it's cold, we on the other hand quote night time temperatures, because, obviously, we go out at 3-5 am in the morning...:p

You'd think we live in Canada or Russia the way some people go on. English winters are mild. Us lot up north walk around in t-shirts most of the time.

hehe i'm over in Sydney and about to have my first Aussie summer

It's amazing how it's 20 degrees here right now and people are wearing jackets and going 'brrrrr'

I was working outside all last winter with a t-shirt, jumper and fleece and was fine.

Not sure what London was like but we had 3-4 weeks with snow on the ground. Probably the most snow I've seen for over 10 years. Hoping it isn't as bad this year.

OP I regularly wore shorts and flip-flops (thongs) through the winter in London. Admittedly I got many odd looks and accused of being Australian, but if you're an Aussie that won't be a problem. :p

Should be ok though, you say that your only option is to stay inside and drink like it's a bad thing :p

*edit*

Haha Vanilla it's the same here, if the temperature drops below 60F (15C) everyone battens the hatches and won't come out until it warms up again :D
