it's entirely possible then that my leg/body ratio, overall height and seat positioning preference puts me in a spot where the armrest is intensely irritating, and for everyone else in the world it is ace.

Simple solution:

leave the handbrake off and chock the wheels

Mine hasn't got one and in the options list it says "Armrest Front, deletion"

My Leon didn't have an armrest and I managed for over two years

Simple solution:

I haven't used the handbrake in years. (slight exaggeration, but I never use it unless I'm on a ridiculous incline)

To be fair the E46 armrest is a bit craptastic. It's slightly too high and seems to squeek on most (not all) of the E46's I've driven as well. Irritating. Plus the leather on it costs horribly shiney after about 4 years so they all look rank.

The E90's design of having it built in as part of the console rather than a silly fold down afterthought is much better.

My e36 328i has heated, electric sports seats, non leather though....

and it has an armrest - which is still looking well despite its 14 years...

Even good things look bad if the person taking the photograph doesn't pay attention to wtf they're doing or is a bit clueless.
